I have used smoothwall 2 and 3 since I connected to ADSL. Recently I
purchased a new Billion modem 7401VGP. I can connect the modem to my
switch and access the internet. I can connect my smoothwall to my
switch and connect to it. However when I attempt to connect the modem
to the RED side of the Smoothie I can get no connection. I can't even
find the modem through Smoothwall. I reinstalled Smoothwall just in
case, made the amendments to allow the Billion to access computers
through the smoothwall, no luck. The modem is set up as a DHCP server
and Smoothwall is configured to use DHCP.

I have even tried to use a fixed IP address but that also gives me no
joy.

Can anyone please assist and what information do I need to give you to
assist me.

My main machine runs XP Pro - Service Pack 3, Smoothwall is on an old
Compaq machine with a 20GB HDD and Intel 586 chip. 512MB RAM I think.

The Smoothwall still works fine if I go back to my Belkin modem and
reset the settings to suit.

I have had similar probs when switching from a zoom x3 using a dynamic ip to a
static ip when the modem internel ip is 10.0.0.2 and switching to a linksys
using 192.168.1.1. I think the main problem is using relating to the nets in
use ie going from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.1.0. Reread the smoothwall docs
regarding network addressing and check by pinging from the smoothwal box to
itself and to the others and then in reverse (ie the other boxes in the
network to the smoothwal box using both the green address and the modem
address.

Thanks, Vince. I'll let you know what happens. The Billion uses an
address of 192.168.1.254 as its internal IP and, according to the
manual, refuses to answer to a machine with an address not in the
range 196.168.1.1-250 so I have been trying to set this as the address
range in Smoothwall.
