Where do I look for that?
Slack 9.1, XFree86, fvwm2, xterm, kmines
I'd kind of like to slow the mouse down while playing kmines.
I don't like kde enough to run it full-time just for kmines,
I just find fvwm and some xterms much more to my tastes.
I guess it's that kde gives me some sort of hemmed-in feeling,
like there should be some kind of proscenium arch or
something. Fvwm, however, is all right there. I guess
I like my windows all spread out, rather than all piled
on top of each other. :-)
Anyway, while playing kmines which I've invoked from an
xterm on fvwm - all the versions are out of the 9.1 box -
the mouse is kinda hard to control, like it's going too
fast. Actually, I and everybody else has[ve] noticed
that this lates batch of mouses is all super-fast. In
Doze, it's fairly easy to fix, but I don't know if I
have all the GUI whiz-bangs, when all I'm running is
FVWM.
Is there an adjustment somewhere?
Thanks,
Rich
In /etc/X11/XF86Config (may be elsewhere), in the Section "InputDevice"
for the mouse [because there can be many Section "InputDevice"] I have a
line
Option "Resolution" "400"
--
Merci........Yvan I did not want to repeat other people's mistakes.
So I made new mistakes of my own.
Boy did I invent some good ones!

Well, I didn't find anything like that in SF86Config, at least not in
the mouse section.
But just to see if KDE had some tool, I've started it up again, and KMines
works fine - so when I want to play mines, I can just start kde instead
of fvwm. AFAICT, that selection is just a symlink from /etc/X11/Xinit
xinitrc
to the appropriate xinitrc.<whichever>.
I can also play the other K games, and pingus, the lemmings clone,
doesn't seem to care which window manager I'm using, so what the hey? :-)
Thanks!

Because you're missing it! Read the man page if you don't believe me.
Here's part of man xset:
m The m option controls the mouse parameters. The parameters for the mouse are `acceleration' and
`threshold'. The acceleration can be specified as an integer, or as a simple fraction. The mouse, or
whatever pointer the machine is connected to, will go `acceleration' times as fast when it travels more
than `threshold' pixels in a short time. This way, the mouse can be used for precise alignment when it
is moved slowly, yet it can be set to travel across the screen in a flick of the wrist when desired.
One or both parameters for the m option can be omitted, but if only one is given, it will be inter
preted as the acceleration. If no parameters or the flag 'default' is used, the system defaults will
be set.
--------------------
I don't want the mouse to go at two different speeds. I want it to go at one speed, or
if it accelerates, I want something that I can control, and for the life of me I can't
find anything that tells me how to translate "how fast does the pointer move" into
an argument for "The m option." Windows has a fucking slider bar. Is there _any_
thing that can give me a similar effect, even if I have to type in numbers. All I
appear to have with the dreaded "m option" is "go too fast for 4 pixels, then go
_N * more_ too fast until the pointer goes off-screen."
How about "how many pixels per mouse pulse" or something?
Thanks, Anybody!

Here's a relevant chunk of XWindow-User-HOWTO:
------------------------4.3. xset
xset is yet another XFree86 utility to set user preferences. xset is a bit of
a catch-all and is used to change various, unrelated X server settings.
Mostly this is a command line way of configuring some of the same things that
are defined in XF86Config (but not everything!).
Common usages of xset are to set DPMS on or off and preferred intervals, to
dynamically change the FontPath or re-read it, to control keyboard LEDs, to
adjust mouse (or other pointer) movement speed, set keyboard "autorepeat" and
"repeat" rates, and to control X's built in screen blanking. See the man
page, of course, for detailed explanations, and other xset usages.
Again, xset can be used interactively from the command line. But most often
preferred settings are stored in one of the start up configuration files,
like .xinitrc or .xsession. A very brief example:
+---------------------------------------------------------------------------+
# Turn off screen blanking
xset s off

# Enable DPMS energy saving
xset +dpms

# Tweak the rodent
xset m 30/10 4

# Speed up keyboard
xset r rate 200 40

+---------------------------------------------------------------------------+
----------------------------------------------
Again, there's that stupid acceleration per man xset, but nothing tells me
what actions these numbers translate into. This apparently means, "go too
fast for the first four pixels, then go 3X too fast off the screen."
How about "when you move the mouse an inch, the cursor moves less than the
whole fscking screen!"
Isn't there just a "Mouse Speed" or "Mouse Motion" or "Mouse Movement"
or "Mouse $SOMETHING" parameter I can set, somewhere?
We got a batch of optical mouses, and we have the same problem in windoze,
but in windoze it's easy to fix - control panel/mouse/movement/slider bar.
Do I have to load another window manager to get some kind of config thing?
Thanks,

I searched google with the terms, xorg mouse resolution, and found
http://freedesktop.org/~xorg/X11R6.7.0/doc/mouse5.html
In there it says
<quote>
5.3. Resolution
The following option will set the mouse device resolution to N counts per
inch, if possible:
Option "Resolution" "N"
Not all mice and OSs can support this option.
</quote>
try adding that to your xorg.conf file. Some where I saw some use 256 for
"N".
