Having composed this message, I run spell-check on it but spellcheck doesn't launch (only flickers) if I have highlighted a complete paragraph or several complete ones.

Then, when I click on "Send" I get a hung message about 'Assembling mesage ..done' but nothing sends. Then if I save as draft and reload the message after restarting T-Bird it sends immediately (but not every time).

I cannot help with this, but --

Since Slackware tends to use unpatched software,
you may want to ask in this group:

alt.comp.software.thunderbird

It is rather active and you may get a decent answer.

Thanks, taking a closer look at pan for now :-)

Use a newsreader (I recommand Pan) instead of an email client.

I'm working on it but am constrained to T-bird right now because my last
6 postings with Pan under Devuan all failed. Pan complains about a bad
email address and makes like it sends, but the message in the Sent
folder with the Subject line at the correct time is an empty page.

Sorry, wrong preposition wrong conclusion, it's starting to be a great
day!

The text not appearing in the Sent folder IS a problem but the one
plaguing me under Devuan was that the message just didn't get sent, two
different issues.

It was many years since I configured pan, but since then it has simply
just worked.

The menu "Edit"/"Edit News Servers" is the place to start. Your news
server provider should be able to provide you with the information to put
in there. I do not use any email address in that dialog, instead I simply
have a username at my news server provider.

Thank you, that's what I have set up, currently booted
into Suse-Leap, Pan seems to work except when this post
is saved to 'draft' it will show no text body when selected
(I didn't close the composition window).

The other invisibles and non-posting are an issue when
using Devuan (Tuesdays), maybe some other distro(s). I'm
tinkering with the use of a single remote .pan2 folder
linked into my user directory in all distros.
