Slackware 15.0 without KDE

I use XFCE, not KDE, but in my previous Slackware installations I
have always installed everything, including KDE, just in case.

Would I miss anything important if I were to install Slackware
15.0 without any KDE packages? I mean, are there any Slackware
applications not shipped with KDE, which are dependent on KDE packages?

One minor issue is that you would not have a good answer, if you needed
support, for the standard question: "Have you done a full installation
of Slackware?"

Basically, if you look below your XFCE application menu and see any
application with aname which starts with a "k" it will depend upon KDE
libraries. Examples of such applications are:

k3b (for burning CD, DVD or BluRay)
Konsole (yet another terminal)
KMail
Konqueror (web browser and file manager)
Krita
KPatience
KStars
KCachegrind
KCalc

However, there are also applications which does not start with "k" which
depends upon KDE libraries. Exampels:

The hated nepomuk
calligra
Amarok
Granatier

If an application below the "help" menu has a choise "About KDE" it will
for sure depend upon KDE libraries.

However, all the applications above are in the slackware*/kde directory
of the installation media. So yes, you will save a lot of disk space by
not installing them, but you will also miss a lot of applications from
your XFCE menus.

Best thing to do (IMHO) would be install from scratch but leaving out
the kde series.
Uncomment the kde/ line in /etc/slackpkg/blacklist.
Do a full update with slackpkg.
Check to see if there is anything missing that you require and cannot
find an xfce alternative for.
However the full kde series only takes up disk space. My full install
takes ~58G out of ~90G - plenty left.

Thanks, guys. Based on what your feedback my conclusion would be
that, unless one has disk space constraints, it is probably not worth the
while going through the exercise of not installing KDE and then see what
applications don't work properly.

What a strange conclusion. If you don't install the kde series all
that will happen is that you will not have any KDE applications
available to you. XFCE will work fine, as will all packages in the
other series.

So your question resolves to "do I need KDE applications". Only you can
answer that. I don't use any KDE applications.
