I think the changelog even mentioned that, I don't think it was just
comments in this newsgroup that spelled it out for me.
I didn't think there ever was an attempt to match release numbers with the
kernel number. Even the jump from 4 to 7 was just to match the hype of
the other distributions.
I used 7.0 when I first used Linux/Slackware, though admittedly it was
mildy old by then, back in 2001. It's hard to believe it's actually up to
almost 14 now, and now Big Leap Forwards this time.
