Does this mean the adapter's driver was not loaded
before trying to configure it? I don't know what
'raspberrypi' is -- do you have a driver for the adapter
and can it be installed before this failed step? The
adapter will probably need to be attached at that time.

Sorry, I don't know the answer. Are you using a using a USB wireless
adapter? Sometimes you need to find and download a driver module, then
run it with modprobe.

Raspberry Pi is the ARM-processor based hardware. I have one
configured to run Slackware that I use as an ethernet router.

It is important to know if you are using a usb wireless adapter.

The first problem I encountered was power to usb devices. I foolishly added a
usb hub and then wondered why my usb devices had issues. I switched to
a powered usb hub and have been happy ever since.

I am not running Slackware on my RPI so this may not be applicable. I needed
firmware to make my wireless work. In my case, it had to be added to where
the kernel searches for firmware.

There is a raspberrypi newsgroup, you may have better luck with your
questions there.

Ima wifi dummy and I jes got my wifi running on my rpi, but I'm using
raspbian. Still, the wpa_supplicant, if you have it, has a gui. Not
surprisingly, it's called wpa_gui. Raspbian has a desktop icon, but
you can invoke the wpa_gui from the command line (omit the underline).
Once the gui is open, do a scan. If your wifi dongle is working, you
should see a list of available networks. Choose one and do a connect.

Also, look in /etc/ for /etc/wpa_supplicant/. In that dir there's a
file called /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf. Turns out, in my
case, the PSK, the wifi network passphrase(?) was in all capitals.
Did I accidently leave my shift key locked or did the wpa_gui jes
assign all letters in the PSK passphrase as capitals? I know not.
All I know is, I edited the PSK passphrase letters to lower case and
it worked perfectly, auto connecting on boot-up. The wpa_gui will
generate and fill this file once you've done a "scan" from the wpa_gui
and chosen a network. Perhaps viewing this .conf file will give you
some clues.

Seems you have the driver for your WiFi adaptor, and it is laoded.
Assume this is a USB adaptor? It is very important to confirm the power
drawn by the adaptor vs the power which can be supplied by the Raspberry
PI, some USB WiFi adapters work fine plugged straight into the RPI, some
require a powered hub. I suggest you check
http://elinux.org/RPi_USB_Wi-Fi_Adapters.

I have a WiFi adapter which I can use with Raspbian OS, it will work
okay plugged directly, and it can scan and list nearby Access Points.
But if I try to actually associate with one, it will fail due to power
problems. To actually connect to WiFi, it has to be used in a powered
hub.

Leigh.
