Ok I got one of these babies and I am trying to enable dri. Please keep in
mind that I have never used anything but nvidia and their drivers which are
really easy to setup and install. So on a slackware-current here is what my
XF86Config looks like:
Section "Module"
Load "record"
Load "extmod"
Load "dbe"
Load "dri"
Load "drm"
Load "glx"
Load "xtrap"
Load "type1"
Load "speedo"
Load "freetype"
EndSection

Section "DRI"
Mode 0666
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "Card0"
Driver "ati"
VendorName "ATI"
BoardName "Rage Mobility P/M AGP 2x"
ChipSet "ati"
ChipId 0x4c4d
ChipRev 0x64
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Card0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 16
SubSection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1400x1050" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
ViewPort 0 0
EndSubSection
EndSection

now when I start fluxbox and do glxinfo i get this:
name of display: :0.0
Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
display: :0 screen: 0
direct rendering: No

and a bunch more autoput but that part is irrelevant. So now when I run
glxgears i get something like 50 FPS well that is not sufficient to run
anything (chrome, tux racer, diablo). So I went to google and tossed it and
turned it and gooogle did not come up with anything past what I have in my
config file (load dri, load glx, and setting the dri perms). One thing i
noticed is that everyone talks about /dev/dri/card0 and I don't have that.
So i though maybe something is screwed or I am not doing it right so i
compile dthe kernel with devfs support and see if it will create it. No
luck. Also I compiled support for DRM in the kernel(nopt sure if it affects
anything). So now I am really out of ideas .... anyone know of anything
that will get this mofo working?

What is the output of lsmod ?

Docs indicate that it should show r128 and r128_dri in the list somewhere.

<snip again, info helpful as well though>

I saw it in the DRI users guide at
http://dri.sourceforge.net/doc/DRIuserguide.html

Glad to see AGPGART there, I forgot about that one.

This is an older card right? lspci shows something like this?

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Rage Mobility
P/M AGP 2x (rev64)

If so, it is a mach64 chip. My lsmod shows both agpgart and mach64.

I don't remember exactly what my fps was in glxgears with the stock
Slackware mach64 module but I think it was about 500fps. I boosted it to
1400+ with the unified DRI and XVideo modules from

http://www.retinalburn.net/linux/dri_xv.html

Snippet from XF86Config:

# Device configured by xf86config:

Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI Rage Mobility P/M"
Driver "ati"
VideoRam 16384
# Insert Clocks lines here if appropriate
EndSection

Do you have the same card? If so can I see your whole XF86Config file? I
installed the suggested drivers and I still get the same output from
glxinfo: no direct rendering. Thanks

Yep, that entry was cut and pasted from my laptop here. I'd be happy to
let you see my whole XF86Config, the main reason I didn't post it before
is because it is full of all kinds of irrelevant stuff, such as
Synaptics Touch Pad module configuration.

After compiling the new mach64 module, did you run depmod? or depmod -A
perhaps that is needed.

in /etc/rc.d/rc.modules is the line /sbin/modprobe agpgart uncommented?

here is my XF86Config, but I don't think the problem is in it. To keep
this posting somewhat shorter, I'll snip some commented lines out.

Oh, when you restart X, do you get any messages in dmesg?

I get:

Did you ever get it working?

When you installed the mach64 DRI module, did you compile it from the
source, or download the binary? If you used the binary modules, you may
wish to try the source and vice-versa.
