Hi all.
I have a "potential" problem. It's just potential because I didn't
actually forget root password. In other distros (as RedHat or Mandrake) if
I happened to forget the root password, I booted the sistem typing at lilo
prompt "linux single". At the end of the boot process I had a shell prompt
and I could do a "passwd" and set a new password.
Now, with Slackware 9, doing exactly the same steps, I get a prompt
saying:
(none) login:
and no login seems to work.
Should I have read TFM better? Or could someone kindly give me a clue?
Thanks in advance for any answer.
Best regards

ER

Boot with the slackware-boot-cd
Mount the /- dir at a favorite point
Go to mountpoint/etc and edit shadow.
Delete in the root-line every character between the first two:.
Save it. Reboot and start root without a passwd. Just
type return. And don't forget to give root a new passwd.

Here's what i would do,

1)Boot the system with the setup cd.
2)mount the partition containing the /etc directory
3)edit the file shadow, you will see a string along side with root,

root:$1$Bcq08:12178:0:::::

remove the string of characters between the first and second colon,
after editing, it should look like:

root::12178:0:::::

4)now, reboot your system , your root password have been remove. hope
this help!

enjoy!

This isn't always an option.

Sometimes the best thing to do is append init=/bin/bash (or your favorite
shell) to the lilo entry and start making your changes.

Thanks. I've tried, and it works (not that I doubt it, but I usually want
to check wether I'm able to replicate a result or not). I've only to do a
copy of my slackware cd and leave it @work.

Best regards

LILO: Slackware init=/bin/bash
mount -o remount,rw /
passwd
mount -o remount,ro /
Hit the Reset button now. Cheers.

ok pal, now here's what you have to do

boot: linux init=/bin/sh

then it will boot your system but it will end up with a # shell
Your system has the minimal services and it is mounted read only
les suppose your / is your /dev/hda2.type:

bash-2.05# /sbin/mount /dev/hda2 / -o remount,rw
bash-2.05# passwd
.
blah..blah..you change your password
.
password changed
bash-2.05# /sbin/mount /dev/hda2 / -o remount,ro
ctl-alt-del (aka reboot)

Be sure to finally remount your / as ro or something might screw up.

regards,
