OT: RTFM and Googling WORKS

I recently purchased a new(ish) laptop and slapped Slack 9 on it.
Tried out ReiserFS and everything, waaa-hooo. Was truly happy with
performance and pretty much everything, but since this is a desktop
replacement, I pulled my .fetchmailrc file off the (Debian) desktop
and stuffed it in the new lappie and tried to pull mail down off the
net.
It didn't work. Even though mail fetching had worked on the desktop
for nigh onto 2 years, suddenly I was getting an authentication error.
My password was apparently not working. Emailed my host: they
confirmed I was using the right password & told me they couldn't be
much help with fetchmail (naturally?).
I looked at the .fetchmailrc file 429 times, trying to catch the typo
I figured I had made. Had an impulse to post to AOLS. Resisted it,
*knowing somehow* that this was a simple thing & that I would either
a) figure it out right after posting and feel idiotic or b) think
first, and learn something from it. I went and read the fetchmail
manual, selectively, anyway. Found nothing. Fought off the impulse to
post here several times.
Then, aha, I Googled. And I found the answer: turns out fetchmail now
defaults to cram-md5 authentication, so (even though turning on the -v
flag did not display any hint toward this) my password was not doing
the trick. I had to use --auth password on the command line. Voila!
I'm not preening: it's not like I figured the problem out myself,
after all. I just read "DON'T TELL ME TO RTFM" here so often, or "gee,
so and so, you are really snotty to tell [me|that newbie|people in
general] to RTFM or go and Google, why don't you just give them the
answer??" or words to that effect. The thing is, RTFM + Googling
*works*. Thinking first works. Digging out the answer works. Most of
the time, anyway.
