As you say, running Slackware current means a lot of updating...
Basically, you might be required to update the kernel firmware after you
have updated the kernel.
If you don't like all those updates you might be better off running
latest Slackware stable which at the time of this writing is Slackware
15.0. Slackware stable only gets security updates.
Depending upon how your virtual machine is used, you might choose to
somehow encapsulate an old OS installation with known security holes in a
virtual environment.
