Hello,

I'm trying to get some gaming going but I can't seem to get openGL going..

system:
mandrake 8.2
ati radeon 64ddr

I got Q3 installed but when I launced it the resolution was changed and
I was kicked back to the desktop (KDE). I ran glxinfo and found that
rendering is not enabled...

I messed with the DRI site for a while trying to install that package
but kept getting this message...
--------------------------

ERROR: Kernel modules did not compile

The DRI drivers can not be installed without the latest kernel modules.
Installation will be aborted. See the dri.log file for information on
what went wrong.

I'm not sure what all that means, did I mention that I'm pretty new to
linux... big time newbie...

so I did some more reading and came across Texstar's
XFree86-4.2.0-11mdk.athlon.rpm and tried to install that but got the
folloing error:

downloaded the <ds/XFree/XFree86-4.2.0-11mdk.athlon.rpm;echo RESULT=$?

XFree86 = 4.2.0-10mdk is needed by XFree86-server-4.2.0-10mdk
RESULT=1

Would really appreciate any help on what to do or which direction to
take from here...

TIA

Not a 100% sure how to fix your problem. The reason, is that openGL
should work on 8.2 and xfree4.2.0 on a Radeon card without needing to
install anything else - at least it does on my box. It may well be
that the stuff you've done with DRI and xfree rpms has misconfigured
stuff, so that the stock radeon drivers don't work. Dunno. My point
is that you shouldn't need to fiddle with a clean install (assuming
everything is detected right) to get openGL on a Radeon card.

Just an adendum to my other post. How do you know openGL is not
working? Q3 could be spinning out for a number of reasons. Usually
to test whether openGL is working, I run tuxracer. If it runs, I
assume openGL is running. Have you established whether openGL is
working or not (independently of Q3)?

Thanks for the response Matt, I concluded that gl wasn't working by running 'glxinfo'. I read somewhere today to use that to check if 'direct rendering=yes' or 'no' ... Mine read 'direct rendering=no'... I checked out hardrake and I have the 4.2.0 with 3D selected... I've discovered a few more reasons why Q3 isn't working since posting... First I learned the 'script' command today so I was able to log why Q3 is crapping out... no q3config.cfg, default.cfg, or autoexec.cfg... (head banging desk now) so this is major problem I'll work on tomorrow... I got it... I went into the mandrake config console and changed to xfree 3.x.x..., rebooted, then back to the console and switched back to 4.2.xxx with 3D, rebooted, ran 'glxinfo' and direct rendering = yes ... Played Q3 for about 15 minutes then it locked up but that's another problem for later... Bryan Bryan wrote: > Thanks for the response Matt, I concluded that gl wasn't working by > running 'glxinfo'.
