ADSL tries to connect, fails. Help again please.

I'm again trying to get my ADSL modem working on Mdk8.1 (I was sidetracked by
my Windoze crashing!)
Note: This is NOT an Alcatel Speedtouch ADSL

I have an internal Etherfast Lan Card LNE 100TX
Siemens Speedstream external ADSL modem
Earthlink DSL connection

It recognizes the Etherfast card, the connection starts and you can see some send activity
and then I get a "failed to connect, check Mandrake Control Center" I've checked that two
dozen times.

I also checked and performed all recommendations for bios settings I've seen here

I don't have the log at this location but here are some of the messages:

Network Unreachable

time out waiting for PADO packets (what are those?)
LCP: timeout waiting on config-request

using interface ppp0
connect: ppp0 /dev/pts/0

pap authentication failed (this makes no sense)

Yes, I did set it to use pppoe

/etc/modules.conf shows alias eth0 tulip

I'm out of ideas. I really need to make this work. I'm sick of my windows
crashing. Any help, suggestions, whatever will be very much appreciated.

Hmmm, that might explain something. I did try setup and start only I keyed in
adsl -setup
and it came back with no such command! Thanks, I'll try it correctly tonight.

I have always seemed to run into the same problem when upgrading from 8.0
to 8.1 and now to 8.2, I always keep a hard copy of my config files right
beside me when I start the upgrade process because the hand configuring
works where the upgrade fails. (Strange thing is, it takes a couple of
passes through before it works, prolly my typing somewhere!! )
