Very sad! The selling person admits that Linux is "too much" for
him/her. The boxed version is a 8.1 Standard Edition (the box with 3
CDs, manual) and the shipping fee is more than I would pay for the box.

The really sad thing is that he/she bought this box 2 weeks ago. There
are a lot of stores where they try to sell outdated versions for the
full price. When 8.1 was already in the stores I saw a 8.0 box on a
shelf for the full retail price. I asked the shop owner and he said he
did not know that a new version was out and he first wants to sell the
old one before he orders new boxes!

Until a couple of weeks ago, Borders in Central London only had 6.1 boxes
for sale.

Yes very sad. But I think part of the problem is that the Distribution do
not take back the old stock. I know from a friend that when a new version
of piece of software arrives they pull all old stock and distroy it. They
then report this back to the company and recieve a rebate/money/credit for
the non sold stock that was destroyed. I believe that the distrobution do
not do that so the old unsold stuff just sits their till sold. This is not
good. But on the other hand the distributions do not make much if anything
and are unwilling to give back a potential sale. For what it is worth the
Long Beach, CA CompUSA still has MDK 8.1 Pro Suite boxes for sale and no
8.2.

Not surprising. Mass merchants just don't get computers at all...

Wal-Mart finally had enough sense to get _out_ of the computer business.
Surprisingly, it dawned on them that it did them no good to buy 500,000
computers at a time and then have them all become un-saleable at a good
profit relative to the purchase price within a few weeks.

They seem to do a better job with software. I think their distributor
recalls and eats old and usless software automatically. The Wal-Mart
people themselves are, of course, totally clueless. You should see the top
secret proprietary stuff they run. I'm not at liberty to discuss it, even
though I really don't owe those bastards anything. Still, you'd be really
amazed at how incredibly crude and primitive it is.

That is correct as there are no 8.2 ProSuite boxes yet on the market.
