Old mandrake problem....

Never used Linux before, I was always a hardware geek...OS was unimportant.
But I don't want to line bill gaytes' pockets anymore so I was going to
switch....I had an old copy of Mandrake 8.1 lying around so I thought I
would start there on my laptop. Now the problems:

During the install, it will get as far as the "add a user section" then hang
completely. Skipping that and proceeding with only root the install
finishes fine. Then upon rebooting I get the message that I cannot start X.
Runs through the configuration but no joy, all tests fail.

Hardware:
Dell made laptop, 1.7G P4, 256megDDR RAM, 30 gig HD(3 gig set up for Linux)
nVidia gforce 2 go video chip, actiontec modem (I wasn't going to bother
with it, but it is in here.)

Now any help for the new guy with the old OS, Or should I buy and try a 9.2
pack?

Before I shelled out any hard earned cash I'd download and burn the
iso's to disc and try to install first. One can get MDK 9.1 iso's now
from linuxiso.org *or* wait a couple of weeks for the MDK 9.2 iso's
to be available. If one of these works *then* give them your money
and join the Mandrake Club.

Oh ... yeah ... your subject line stinks. ;-)

first off thanks for the replies so far, I am on a slow-backwoods-ass-dialup
so I wont be downloading the iso files any time soon, but I will try to get
a friend of mine in the next town over to take a break from porn surfing to
get them for me. Burn them with Nero? or the mandrake image burner from
windows? Next, I am on the slow road to nvidia to try for those Linux
drivers, already formatted Linux for a clean install so how does the
installation go? It seems I will be command lining it for a bit and my
documentation is all sparse (non existent) for commands. and which do I
need? they list IA32, IA64, AMD64, Free BSD, and nForce (which I do not have
so I assume it is out of the question....) After the clean install I will
try to generate the same error, write it down and post it back for more
help. And finally I will try to come up with new and more interesting
subject lines, after all this whole computer thing is supposed to be fun
right ERACC?

Thanks all around guys and girls, Nobody out for a few hours.

You dont actually need those drivers to get a fully
functional Mandrake, exept for some games and
3D rendering SW. For normal "office use" nvidia works
just fine, any model i think.

A little help with the "command-lining":

Right on, l'il bro! But my *name* ain't ERACC. ;-)

Actually a decent subject line will get one more responses as it is
less likely to be skipped over by the True Guru Dudes.

I assumed(and we all know the danger of that ) that the stock settings would
work for a dell laptop panel. I was naturally wrong, my old 8.1 installed
fine with the display panel set to generic 800x600@56 Htz, even though the
lcd is 1024x768@60... now how do i change tie refresh to 60 and the size to
1024? I figured it would be in the gui (although I was really interrested
in command line) but upon booting the gui, I found another problem. I have
no mouse pointer. I am assuming this is because I need to rpm the tpconfig
file I downloaded, but it is on a floppy since linux cant read my ntfs
partition and being a newbie I do not know how to get there...but thanks to
the post on commandlines I figure I may find it....but if some nice youth
wnats to send a quick reply telling me how to get there from the command
line....well I would be thankful.

from the commmandline you need to edit XF86Config-4 found in /etc/X11
you can set the resolution and refresh here. I don't know about laptops
but you should browse the HOWTOs for what settings might be appropriate
for your screen and mouse and what should go in XF86Config-4.

You should be able to mount the ntfs volume mount -t ntfs
/mnt/yourntfsmount /dev/hda3

replace /dev/hda3 with whatever your ntfs partition is
