Hello,

recently I installed Mdk8.0-- i was very happy with it as it worked better
then mdk 7.2, that is, in all but one respect: fonts.

The problem is solely with what seem to be "display" text fonts in
Netscape, Konqueror, Mozilla, and word processors: that is, fonts (like
helvetica, arial, not just courier or something) in the browser windows
(but not in the location bar or file menu) appear broken and cut off.

I've done a few things to try to solve this problem:
- adjusted the "character set" settings in netscape and konqueror
- played around with the settings in the Mandrake Control Center
- tried DrakFont

I have one suspect responsible for my eye soreness: xfree4.0.3. Is xfree
responsible for fonts? I've noticed there were two options for xfree during
install, could it be a bug? Should I try installing Xfree 3.3.6?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks
Tuximus.

I have see slow refresh rates cause eys strain and headaches.
I have to run mine at 75 or better.
At 60, I can see the screen flicker.

which is of course nonsense according to theory but i too can see it .
also why do gamers want 60fps i never left a movie saying " that 25fps was

Not at all. Depending on the medium, most people can appreciate
framerates well above 100fps, which is supported by numerous studies.
That's also why a 60Hz monitor refresh isn't high enough.

Apples and oranges--movies and computer images are two completely
different mediums. Here's a good introductory article that debunks that
tired old myth about 30fps being sufficient for computer games:

Okay... Just a follow-up.

It appears that for most of the stubborn applications
using Fixed-width fonts; A simple way to workaround is to
change the default KDE fixed-width font.
That is done from the KDE Control Center->LookNFeel->Fonts.
The Ugly fixed-width should jump at your face looking at it. ;)
I picked Dec Terminal 11 for a test moment, and all looks better.

What is wonderful, is that it resolved the Kdevelop browser font
problem in a similar way. Kdevelop does not allow me to change the
Document Browser options for fonts.
That can then be done from KDE Control Center. (Hickup)

Ah... Fasten your seatbelt for this last FIX.
In KDevelop 1.4.1, The documentation browser font stuck
is 'newspaper'.. Yet, what I see is quite ugly and stuck.
Yet, from KDE control .. Fonts.. I just change the ''general' font.
To something else, than Helvetica 11 et voila.. Kdevelop,
still lists 'newspaper' as its font, but the font used is now the
one I pick in 'general' .... Helvetica 11 *IS* quite UGLY once
scaled by other applications.

So for now, I have General font set to Actionis 11 default,
and Fixed width to lucida console. That's a start.

Hoping for a better understanding at this,
Regards,
Ben

Same here.

I have not played as much as you did, since It was so good in 7.2 and before,
I had to assume something was wrong. From other complaints, I knew it was
somethink broken, somewhere.

>I've done a few things to try to solve this problem:
>- adjusted the "character set" settings in netscape and konqueror

That's about what I finally did, for the most part.
Yet, some applications are stubborn with fonts.
KDevelop for example. In the 'Documentation Browser', leaving the standard
will give me Horrible fonts at Medium size. Yet, at Small or Large, they
appear to be much better.. I thought I could live with that, until I saw what the
source-code in the browser actually looked-like ..YEiiks !
Kdevelop browser options are stuck to standard fonts 'newspaper' and
fixed font 'courrier', Changing them results in nothing, and the next time
I open the browser options, I still get newspaper and courrier fonts.
That's for one bug; That I have yet to find a workaround.

Next is the TT font importer.
Although Mandrake Control Center ->System->Fonts->Get Windows Fonts
Seems to work, the progress bar / CANCEL option is stuck, giving the
impression the task never completes. Fortunately I found-out closing the
Control-Center altogether after the Hard-disk activity stops yelds the expected
results. Imported TT fonts are found... That's another bug I can live with.
Still a font related bug.

Nope,
I'm running XFree 3.3.6 3D accelerated, no AA possible.
And still get the Ugly font batch.

>Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
>

Yes,,, Quite a few.
You might want to try to enable AA if it works for you. I dunno.
You must have the hardware that supports RENDER option,
listed .type in a shell. xdpyinfo | more

Then, I read somewhere that the Fontpath should be fixed for Mozilla fonts.
"mozilla-fonts package is installed but not added to the font path.
This is easy to change. Simply add the line
"/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts" " - Tip from Willie... Thank him.

And I also read that there is a FREE font that could resolve it:
-----From Andrew:: akar'th'orrible-----
"is a free fixed width font available called Aaaakar Deja vu which will
automatically go to the top of your font list. When control-centre
fonts changes the fixed font back to the top font on the list you will
at least have a working TT monospaced font that looks remarkably like
courier new. As a matter of fact you'll swear that you saw it before
some place. I know this isn't as good as a patch to recompile and fix
the problems properly but it may help some people temporarily.

You can find it on:

http://www.users.bigpond.com/trader2001 " -Andrew
-----------------------

I don't know the cause, as I am a bit newbie into Linux configurations.
I have to learn about fonthpath, and the hierarchy of this all.
Then figure-out how to fix Kdevelop 1.4.1 browser fonts, and see
if they are affected by the other KDE font related settings.

If you find a trick, don't heasitate to post.
Some people here seem not to understand the problem.
Refresh rate.. ROTFL.. What a door knob ! ;)

Not at all silly. What one see's as flicker is the beat frequency between
the monitor and lighting. That is interference that is the difference
between the two frequencies or phase change between the two sources if they
are the same frequency.

In a movie theater, they generally turn off the lights so there is no "beat
frequency"

You asked for it.... And I found some more:
--------------- From http://www.mandrakeuser.org
XFree86 problem with gcc-2.96 (Score: 1)
by arnd on Friday, April 27 @ 13:03:26 PDT
(User Info)

Today I found the reasons for a part of the problem. The level of optimization
that is used when compiling the XFree86 package triggers a bug that
causes Type1 Postscript fonts to be almost unreadable. It has to be compiled
with either a different compiler, without the -O2 flag or with an additional
-fno-force-mem flag.

The bug is present in the file /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/fonts/libtype1.a, which
luckily can be easily replaced with another working version. You can
download a freshly compiled file from http://users.evitech.fi/~arndb/cooker-type1-fonts/
if you need a fix now or wait for an eventual update if the XFree86-4.0.3 rpm.
If you don't want to install an unsigned binary file from the internet, extract
libtype1.a from the XFree86 rpm from Mandrake 7.2.

------------

Other workarounds would be to play with fontpaths:

------- Posted by tom on Wednesday, April 25 @ 09:18:45 PDT
In '/etc/X11/fs/config': switch the positions of these lines (as 'root'):
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi:unscaled,
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi:unscaled,
In KDE's Control Center: 'LookNFeel' - 'Fonts' change the setting for 'Fixed Fonts' from 'courier' to 'lucidatypewriter'
Do the same in the 'WebBrowsing' - 'Konqueror Browser' - Appearance' module.
-------

I'm learning too.
Hope this helps make the problem clearer.
Regards,
Ben

I see a lot of people are having this problem-- 8.1 better have this fixed.
I've been playing with fonts-- i learned something indeed, but it only
provided a bandaid solution, think i'll download the new lib file.

Actually, an easier fix is to uninstall the fonts associated with AbiWord.
It seems Abi somehow overwrites the font configuration and the end result is
ugly fonts. After installing LM8 I had the same problem too, and nothing I
tried fixed the ugly font problem, until I stumbled over the Abi fix in this
newsgroup.

I replaced the file with the one from this site, and now X won't start if I
try to load the Type1 module. The file libtype1.a is in place, and with the
same permissions as the other files there as far as I can see. It still
seems as if it can not find it. I've tried doing 'ldconfig'.
How do I fix this?
