Intel and AMD processors are not identical. The AMD K6 series was built
similar to the i586 (pentium) architechure. It was just a lot faster,
more efficient, and supported extensions like 3D-now and MMX. Intel
Pentium-II/III (possibly P-Pro) are i686 as well; they are based of the
architechture of the Pro. Athlon and Duron (which are much faster than
Intel, BTW) also fall into the i686 category, so your recompile is a
success.
