I would like to stick with mdk for the sensible default configs, good
utilities, etc., but can I make it faster?
Please don't say "shut down services"; I had the same services running on
debian, so that's not the cause.
TIA, fred
First, run the KDE Control Center from configure your Desktop
Components--->Service Manager
and uncheck/stop all Startup Serivces.
If still slow
Post contents of
/etc/hosts
/etc/resolv.conf
Click up a terminal and do the following:
su -l root
chkconfig --list | grep tmdns
exit
Is Kat (desktop search environment) running? If yes, stop it and uninstall
it. Kat has been known to cause significant slowdowns in Mandriva 2006.

Thanks for the tip. Almost as fast as debian now--the improvement is
noticeable. Is kat the real problem, as Gireesh suggested?
Now if I could only get my wireless (ipw2200B/G) to work.
cheers.
