The initial printer installation to LMDE was just as easy as installing
it to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. LMDE recognized my HP LaserJet P1005 and
confirms that it is installed (green checkmark), except that it won't
print ("Printing Stopped").

So I did a sudo hp-check which revealed under "SUMMARY":-
"error: 15 errors and/or warnings.
[big snip]
Please refer to the installation instructions at:
http://hplip.sourceforge.net/install/index.html"

Well, the download page of http://hplip asks for Linux distribution and
version. Unless I missed something, I was unable to locate anything
related to Linux Mint Debian edition 201204. It's either Linux Mint
version 8 to 13 or Debian version 5.0 to 6.0.5.

So I thought 'what the heck' and used the Linux Mint 13 option to
download/install HPLIP 3.12.6. All went smooth and followed the
'prompts' conscientiously. Even the HP Device Manager was displayed in
both application menu and task-bar. However the printer still didn't
print even though I rebooted a couple of times.

Another hp-check revealed:
WARNING: gnome-keyring:: couldn't connect to:
/tmp/keyring-12jQzN/pkcs11: No such file or directory
scheduler is running
1.5.2
Linux sherman 3.2.0-2-amd64 #1 SMP Sun Mar 4 22:48:17 UTC 2012 x86_64
GNU/Linux

hp-check[2903]: info: :| INSTALLED CUPS PRINTER
[big snip]
hp-check[2903]: info: :Missing Required Dependencies
hp-check[2903]: info: :Done.

I felt I had to clean out the system prior proceeding with other options
but didn't want to reinstall LMDE again. So I decided removing ALL HPLIP
related items via Synaptic Package Manager and hope the system is now
'clean' again.

hp-check
The program 'hp-check' is currently not installed. To run 'hp-check'
please ask your administrator to install the package 'hplip'
hp-check: command not found

The HP Device Manager has also disappeared from the task-bar but is
still present in the application menu though it wouldn't 'open' anymore.

Grateful for suggestions to install HP LaserJet P1005 printer to LMDE
successfully.

Linux Mint Debian Edition - answer all such questions as 'Debian'
not 'Ubuntu'.

Did you get 'cups' installed properly? You may want to
re-install via Synaptic.

I have also found that re-booting the HP printer can re-establish
cups setup after you have made configuration changes which affect
the USB communications. Tell us if it's Go/Nogo, especially after
a few days.

Okay, I got it now.

I did as you've suggested.

This finally did the trick!

1. sudo apt-get install hplip
2. sudo hp-setup -i
