Since this group is dead, I think it would be a good group for
discussing MX Linux.

MX Linux is everything Debian should have been, I should know, I tried
Debian several times, and finally gave up.

The only thing I didn't like about MX Linux, was that the panel was on
the left side of the screen placed vertically. I found by using the
tool, MX Tweak, I could place the panel at the bottom horizontally.

It's an operating system you can install and start using immediately.

No, use alt.os.linux or comp.os.linux.misc instead.

In normal circumstances, the Debian install is working fine.
Do you have special hardware or software configuration?

The only thing I wanted from Debian was Xfce, and I checked that during
the install. What I got was not Xfce. Then I tried to use sudo, and
was told that my name was not in the sudoers file. I know I put in a
user password and a root password.

It's not me that's screwed up, it's Debian. I have never had a problem
using MX Linux.

I have tried to get Eternal September to add the group, but they never
have.

I've done a few installs where I chose and got Xfce in the expert
install mode. From a fresh install, I've usually just used `su -` to hop
up to root, I didn't realize sudo is autoinstalled these days?

... and I've never had a problem with installing an Xfce with Debian and
becoming root. If these were common problems then there would be a lot
of noise from many people. If you try again, do feel free to ask here
for help.

Which means that you don't have 'sudo'; but rather would need to 'su' to
the root account. In order to have 'sudo' (and a locked / no root
account), you need to leave the root pw blank during setup.

Debian's installer has been this way for years (probably over a decade
at this point).

You're welcome to use "alt.os.linux.mepis", mx-linux used to be mepis
and it's a better group to talk about or ask questions about mx-linux or
antix.

I just sent an Email to wolf...@eternal-september.org and requested
the group MX Linux be added to their subscribers list. We will see
what happens.

This is the website that gives the Email address:

https://www.newsgroupreviews.com/eternal-september.html

It's at the bottom of the page. It might help if more people requested
the new group.

You can get that from virtually any distro.

> the install. What I got was not Xfce.

Then what did you get? And did you set XFCE as the default DTE? My
guess is that you didn't, and so the default desktop, which came up at
first boot, was Gnome. Then you, being too clueless to quit Gnome and
start XFCE, became frustrated and "rage quit".

> Then I tried to use sudo, and
> was told that my name was not in the sudoers file. I know I put in a

A root password does not get you into the sudoers file. You can easily
set that up, however.
First, log in as root or su to root. Then, make sure the sudo package
is installed:

apt-get update
apt-get install sudo

Next, run visudo to edit the sudoers file. Make sure you understand the
sudoers file before you do so, though (man sudoers). When you save the
file and quit the editor, if you've done everything correctly (It's not
that hard.), sudo should be available to you. Log out and log back in
as your ordinary user, and sudo to your little heart's content.
Actually, I've heard that if you don't set a root password at install
time, sudo will be installed, the first user to be created will be in
sudoers and root login will be disabled. I've never done that, though;
so I don't know whether this is correct. It might be worth your while
trying.
OTOH, if MX is working for you, stick to that.

> It's not me that's screwed up, it's Debian. I have never had a

No, it's you, I'm afraid.
Debian is not perfect, by any means (especially since adopting
systemd - but don't open that box, Pandora!), but some of us are smart
enough to work around its shortcomings to gain its advantages.

> problem using MX Linux.

Well, that's fine. To each his own! Do what works for you. But don't
whine about what doesn't, please!

That's a shame! Perhaps they will if you keep pestering them.

When Mepis folded the forum became MX-Linux, may as well use the Mepis
news group too, it's a good place to post antiX or MX-Linux chat or
questions. I was using Mepis from day one and using kde from day one,
that's over 20 yrs using kde. Most admin at MX-Linux where Mepis users
like me and helped with the development of Mepis.

I expect devs of every distro to *see to it* that
alt.os.linux has a sub for them

Some others will say that for Devuan. Why not boot
a different distro every day of the week? For me
Tuesdays are Devuan days and Sundays it's AvLinux

AvLinux uses it too, I prefer an almost identical left
and right deskbar scheme on all 7 distros that I use
.... and would never hear of anything else. It also
helps in recovering real-estate from the 16:9 insanity.

In my Debian/Mx based AvLinux it's with XFCE,
here's the dark-hours desktop:

Well, it's clean enough, easier to work with a sober business-like desk,
that's been my experience anyway. Far be it from me claiming that this
or that desktop is better than...etc, mine is the answer to my needs
after something like thirty years of compuking; I like greens, the
easiest colors on the eyes, being the color of leaves. But I can just as
easily violate my own rules and do Devuan like so:

https://i.imgur.com/jRrwvDs.png

The desk bars on all my distros are like the control panels in a
cockpit: systems generally on the left and mission stuff generally on
the right. By sticking to a common layout I get less confused booting
one system or another. I had used a top panel for years but when 16:9
became the standard I decided to reclaim some of all that lateral
real-estate with a left deskbar at first and then one on each side.
