You can get that from virtually any distro.

Then what did you get? And did you set XFCE as the default DTE? My
guess is that you didn't, and so the default desktop, which came up at
first boot, was Gnome. Then you, being too clueless to quit Gnome and
start XFCE, became frustrated and "rage quit".

A root password does not get you into the sudoers file. You can easily
set that up, however.
First, log in as root or su to root. Then, make sure the sudo package
is installed:
apt-get update
apt-get install sudo
Next, run visudo to edit the sudoers file. Make sure you understand the
sudoers file before you do so, though (man sudoers). When you save the
file and quit the editor, if you've done everything correctly (It's not
that hard.), sudo should be available to you. Log out and log back in
as your ordinary user, and sudo to your little heart's content.
Actually, I've heard that if you don't set a root password at install
time, sudo will be installed, the first user to be created will be in
sudoers and root login will be disabled. I've never done that, though;
so I don't know whether this is correct. It might be worth your while
trying.
OTOH, if MX is working for you, stick to that.

No, it's you, I'm afraid.
Debian is not perfect, by any means (especially since adopting
systemd - but don't open that box, Pandora!), but some of us are smart
enough to work around its shortcomings to gain its advantages.

Well, that's fine. To each his own! Do what works for you. But don't
whine about what doesn't, please!

That's a shame! Perhaps they will if you keep pestering them.
