I was using a Hauppauge Nova-T stick to get DVB-T channels and after a
lot of work trying to get Kaffeine to work, finally started using
mplayer2 (which is very like mplayer).

Learning that DVB-T2 is the next standard, I purchased a PCTV Nanostick
USB DVB-T2 tuner which arrived this morning. I removed the Hauppauge
Nova-T, connected the antenna to the Nanostick, and popped the latter
into a USB port.

Checking dmesg showed that the kernel 3.3-2.towo.1-siduction-686
recognised the Nanostick 290e. Did a web-search for dvb-t2 usb linux and
got a page with links to someone who had investigated the 290e.

A web page showing the box the device came in showed the box I received
this morning. The rod antenna looks as though it would not do.

I then downloaded the new NVIDIA graphics driver (issued in April 2012)
version 295.40. It had to be run as root with X not running. So I logged
out and keyed Ctrl-Alt-F1, logged in as root, issued the command
init 3
to stop kvm and X. Changed to /home/sian/Downloads.
chmod +x NVIDIA-Linux-x86-295.40.run
./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-295.40.run
Accepted the Licence details.
Asked the installer to try to create a file to disable the Nouveau
driver, which it did
(/etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-installer-disable-nouveau.conf) and then rebooted.

The kernel rebooted and the Nouveau driver did not load. The new NVIDIA
driver loaded according to dmesg.

With the 290e nanostick connected, did a run of w_scan (from the Debian
w-scan package) as follows:
w_scan -O 1 -M -c GB -C UTF-8 >channels.conf
When it finished, I had 38 channels in the file including 4 HD channels.

Tried this command for mplayer:
mplayer dvb://BBC\ HD -ao alsa -vo x11
Some output but had no video.
Tried this:
mplayer dvb://BBC\ ONE\ Scot -ao alsa -vo xv
which produced a window with BBC 1 Scotland running. Keying f gave
fullscreen TV, both audio and video Ok.

Tried the mplayer command with BBC\ HD again with -vo xv, but again
there was no video (no window opened).

Clobbered it with ^C twice.
Issued the command
cut -f1 -d: .mplayer2/channels.conf |pv &
(pv is my own file viewer)
This gave me a window with the 38 channels listed. One of them was
BBC HD and another was BBC One HD, also Channel 4 HD and STV HD.
Tried BBC\ One\ HD and again no video.

Has anyone succeeded in getting Kaffeine to scan channels successfully?
Has anyone succeeded in getting HD channels on a PCTV?

Sincerely

Well, using Autoscan as the source for kaffeine Digital TV->Configure
means that when I do the scan for channels, I get all the channels that
w_scan found. 23 channels, including 4 HD channels. I am now going to
double click on a channel and see what I get. Yup, BBC HD gives a
picture and keying 'f' gives full-screen output. Truly great! At last,
TV on the PC!
