I realised I was using 0.8.6 version of VLC and not the latest version.
Maybe thats why I couldnt get a nice picture. Tried some .avi and .mpg files
from old windows 95 & 98 disks to look at. The picture looked like it was
reflected in a bunch of thin mirrors. Started checking off boxes in the
preferences window and suddenly...viola~~!!! it works...then it stopped having
good sound...so I'll install the latest version to see if its better.
Its probably some little detail I dont know about though :)

And then it stopped having a decent picture and its back to looking like its multiple images overlayed on each other.
Somethings weird since I cant even see the .avi files that came with BeOS Pro of the crew throwing monitors off the rooftop :(

Search for "VLC" and delete all references found in /boot/home/config/
settings that will take back to the default setting of VLC.

PS. You do realize the latest version for BeOS is 0.8.6c ? Make sure
you have the latest version.

Ok.

I have that version installed in /boot/home/ in its own folder. I thought running it from that folder would be sufficient.
Since I was dragging and dropping files into the new version.
I subscribed to the vlc mailing list so maybe theres still hope to get this working.

Talking to myself again...that didnt do anything. VLC still shows a mangled
picture but I did open some .mpeg and .avi files successfully wit hMedia Player.
Media player handles MPEG-1 and .avi files but not 'Intel-Indio Video 3 Codec'
avi files...

Finally got it working by unchecking "direct draw" since this videocard only supports "draw bitmap" and the rest defaults.

plus theres apparently some info here:
