Dear Fellow Toastmasters,

Last night on The Discovery Channel, I saw an new commercial for
Hilton Garden Inn.

In the ad, one of the statements the narrarator made was "... you
joined Toastmasters...", in a reference to business travelers
preparing for their day.

Does this mean that Toastmasters is becoming more and more well-
known... or did TI slip Hilton a little cash to get a plug? :)

Did anyone else see the commercial in question and what are your
thoughts?

Thanks in advance for responding and I look forward to reading them.

Respectfully Submitted,
Steve Williams, DTM :)

Steve -

I've seen the commercial, too. Knowing what the sentence is saying, I like
the commercial. However, I run into many people who don't know what
Toastmasters is, so I wonder if there really is much of a benefit in terms
of advertising for our organization.

Every bit of PR helps you know.

And the absolute worst thing that can happen is somebody
watching the commercial will mistake us for a toaster
company.

It might even inspire someone to look on line or in the phone book to find
out what Toastmasters is.

Apropos of your last comment, one of my clubs is listed in the phone book as
Toastmasters of Simi Valley. The number is that of my in-home business.
Every so often I get a call from someone who wants a small appliance
repaired.

At one of the contests when I was a Div Gov, I gave out a Toastmaster brand
toaster as a humorous prize in the raffle/opportunity drawing.

<grin>

When I was growing up, we had a phone number that was one
digit different from the repair department for an Edmonton
Honda dealership.

I see there is an explanation for this at Toastmasters web site.
Feature is called Toastmasters in the News in case this link doesn't
work. You can also view commercial by clicking on link after

My current personal phone number is one digit different from the number for
an organization called Pet Stop Rescue. Apparently they have a number
listed in several places on the Internet, and one of those places actually
lists my number. Once I learned it, I put the correct number at the end of
the message on my answering machine.

Good idea.

Of course, if you can get the organization to correct the
number on its website, even better.

That is quite a juxtaposition of ideas. I like Toastmasters better
than flossing my teeth.

Yes, it would be better. However, the people who take calls are volunteers
who don't know how to change it. I've tried sending an email, but gotten no
response. I've gone to the only website I can find for them, and the number
there is correct. Still, I get calls from people who say they found it on
the Internet.
