I am a new member of Toastmasters (Icebreaker on Wednesday!) and I
have a question about titles. I understand CTM, ATM-B, -S, -G, CL, AL,
and DTM.. my question is that some of the names I've seen on the
internet (such as my district governor) have a Number after the title.
Example: ATM 7, or CL 2. What does this mean?

I know I could just ask someone in my club on Wednesday but I'm into
that instant gratification thing. Thanks!

It's a kind of not so subtle way in this newsgroup to confessing that you
have more than one of said designation.

Welcome Steven,

Congratulations on joining this worldwide organization, and
on your Ice Breaker on Wednesday!

My understanding is that the numbers indicate how many times
a person has achieved each level. For example I could put a 2
after my CTM's (or shortly a 3) and a 2 after my CL or even
a 2 after ATM-B. However, I just put down my highest level and
don't worry about the others - it could get complicated and too
cumbersome.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your responses. I thought that would be the case, until I saw
that someone had a DTM 7 after her name. That someone would go and get 7
DTMs seemed unreasonable to me, but hey I'm new at this so I don't have a
clue. My club doesn't have a lot of people who've attained titles. The only
one that I know of is our president, and he has a CTM. It was chartered in
2000 and I understand people were really working towards it, but our club
was really hit hard after 9/11. I joined in Jan 2002 and have no first-hand
experience of the dynamics of the club pre-9/11, but my Girlfriend has been
a member for 6 months and from what she tells me, we lost so many members
(fortunately no deaths that I know of, but more due to layoffs and
relocations) that the club was basically forced to start over, from scratch.
In a short period of time we went from a club that had over 30 people at
meetings to less than 10. The old prez is gone, and our meeting place is
relocated (we met in the Amex building across the street from the WTC - it
was the one that was punctured by the huge girder. Remember news film of the
Amex building with the girder hanging out of it? that was us.) In the new
building, security is such that guests need to be on our list by 4:00pm the
day before a meeting - and even with this restriction, we've managed to add
several new members in January and more in February. My club is great
people. When there are so few people in my club, guests are asked to
participate in aspects of the meeting. I went to three meetings as a guest.
In the second meeting I was asked to be the timer, in the third, table
topics leader. In the few meetings I've been to, I've had such a good time
that I'm willing to participate in rebuilding the club to its pre-9/11
levels and I'm totally committed to completing the requirements for CTM and
CL.

Wow.. that short response turned into a long story. I didn't intend to do
that. Sorry for rambling. Take care.

There is nothing official about putting numbers after titles, and while most
people might interpret that as the number of times the title was achieved
that may not always be the case. If you know this person, you could always
ask her what she means by this. Maybe she has earned the DTM 7 times, in
which case that wouldn't be unreasonable but quite remarkable.
