Dear Colleagues,

We are currently developing a global/local participatory democratic
space to address various social issues of concern to economic
geographers. It will also have a civic action, organizing
component through study and action circles.

On April 25, 2012 a Global Teach-In will take place in several
locations in the United States, South Africa, Europe and potentially
elsewhere:
www.globalteachin.com

The purpose of the teach-in is to address emerging democracy networks,
alternatives to the financial system and strategies to overcome the
triple crises
defined by: economic decline, ecological devastation and reliance on
unsustainableenergy systems. The teach-in will describe these crises
as well as
concrete and comprehensive solutions. Featured speakers will include:
Gar
Alperovitz and Ellen Brown, leading theorists on institutional
economic
alternatives; Jigme Thinley, Prime Minister of Bhutan; John Barry, and
Colin Hines,
leading British thinkers on green economics; Alice Slater, a noted
disarmament activist among others. European locations
to date: Belfast and London, UK and Stockholm, Sweden and
potentially Nottingham. Durban, South Africa.
Other locations:
Ann Arbor, Boston, Burlington, Durban, New York, Washington, DC,
Madison, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Portland (OR), and
potential locations in Chicago, Detroit, San Antonio, Mexico
City and elsewhere:

Other themes include discussions of cooperatives,
alternative banks, and the need to demilitarize the economy or place
constraints on weapons exports.

The Global Teach-In has been endorsed by Thea Harvey (Economists for
Peace & Security), United Electrical Workers, Wisconsin Wave,
Planners Network, and Architects/Designers/Planners for
Social Responsibility as well as numerous other individuals and
organizations.

The Global Teach In aims to broaden the
public space for professionals to promote a critical dialogue through
face-to-face
discussions, study & action circles, and electronic broadcasts.
We are cooperating closely with WINS, the Worker Independent News
labor radio network to expand the audience for this initiative.

If you would like to participate or would like more information,
please contact us at: globalteac...@gmail.com and explore
the webpage: www.globalteachin.com
We are especially interested in participation by those who would
like to come to the local events or help bolster the organization of
this academic and civic space in their local communities.

Thank you.

Sincerely yours,

Dr. Jonathan M. Feldman, Principal Convenor
