I have a 1986 Chevy Blazer 4x4 2.8L. I was driving along, when I noticed my
voltage drop, about 20 seconds later, the charging system idiot light came
on. I replaced the battery today, and it wasn't the problem, since the
idiot light is still on. I tested for field magnetism, which seems to be
working, but the alternator/regulator isn't putting out enough juice to
recharge the battery (13.66V engine running, 13.21V battery only). I don't
have any fancy tools, just my good ol' ratchets, and a few multimeters...how
can I test the alternator itself? Should I just scrap the alternator for
one from a junk yard, or get a mechanic to do it? If a mechanic does it,
how much will the parts be (reman or new)?
