Post to prevent possible newsgroup removal for inactivity.

BTW, I no longer look at the ATT newsgroup. Nothing but a good ol'
boys/girls club AFAICS.

Pretty much...
Amusing though, when the Bickersons go at each other.

Hi Cal, I'm still around, our Verizon copper lines here in central IL
along with another 13 states were sold off to Frontier Communications, a
small Telco that took over [most the former-GTE area] or what VZ said
was unprofitable area's :-) VZ unloaded all the copper lines, old
hardware, and equipment, and local Telco offices right down to the old
non-maintained for the last few years rusted-out old car and truck
fleet...everything but VZ wireless is now Frontier owned here.

I'm only 602 line feet from local office just down the street from
me here in downtown Bloomington, IL, VZ and now Frontier cap the DSL at
7.1/768 which I have no trouble getting being so close. :-)

But most experts say Frontier will go bankrupt by taking on the huge VZ
dept and long neglected lines and equipment...just like the 2 other
small telco's failed when buying out a couple VZ unwanted area's, one in
the northeast and the other in Hawaii failed with the customers left
picking up the pieces with rate increases.

Well good to hear from you Cal! I suppose you'll be heading back
south in few months or if it ever cools off up here...heck the way
things are going in a few more years you may not have to go south to be
where its warm! :-)

Hi, Patrick - Good to hear from you too. Heading north to VT tomorrow
for several weeks before heading south to FL around Halloween. (In a few
years, FL will probably be underwater, and VT will probably be
beachfront and to too warm to stand!)

Both places have similar telco histories to what you were saying about
your part of IL:

- Much of VT is now handled by FairPoint, who took over from VZ, who
took over from...!

The telco in our part of FL has changed names at least four times in the
last ten years or so - I have to look at a bill to tell who it is now!

It doesn't seem likely that it would ever be removed. Even less active is
the PacBell (Pacific Bell) group. And it will be there forever. I currently
reside in former PacBell territory, and signed up for PacBell DSL. SBC had
already bought "The Pacific Telesis Group" by then; but they allowed the
regional operating companies to continue to sell services under the regional
names through about February of 2002.

(Sorry about setting the 'Followup-To', but I only ever used Prodigy on a
30-day trial around 1990, or so; I've been a PacBell user since the
government broke up Ma Bell in 1984; signing up for DSL in February, 2001,
when it finally became available!) ;)
