When sending emails, I am suddenly getting the following message ...

"The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'ucb',
Server: 'mail.pacbell.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 465, Secure(SSL): Yes, Socket
Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E"

Did something change recently (since Friday)?
Anyone know what's wrong?

I jsut sent a test message to my own account and it worked, but I'm
not using SSL - didn't know they allowed SSL on mail.pacbell.net.

I started gettting calls from two pacbell.net customers at about noon
today (Monday) where outgoing email was not working reliably. One
office was getting that message, but only on Outlook Express clients.
Thunderbird was working just fine. At about 3PM, the OE problems
magically went away. No clue what happened and I didn't check if they
did anything to fix it.

Same here. I just tried SMTP from my account on pacbell.net. Port 25
worked just fine. SSL in both incoming 995 and outgoing 465 did NOT
work. I don't recall if SSL was working in the past. I'll check with
the customers and see how it was setup.

Not sure what the appropriate settings should be since
authentication was not required until not long ago.
Anyone know?

I'm not sure what you are asking? The smtp settings are included in the
information above.

AT&T over the last year has been sending all their customers email
messages with all the proper and more secure settings they want their
customers to use. If you can't find your copy I would suggest contacting
support to make sure you have the correct settings.

I think he means if he insists on using the old servers.

Incoming POP3 server: postoffice.pacbell.net
Port: 110

No SSL or TLS.
Authentication: accoun...@pacbell.net and password

I called one of my customers that was having problems yesterday and
found that they were both using port 587, which apparently was
temporarily not working. I tested both 25 and 587 from my house (on
cruzio.com) and they both work this morning.

Oh-no, not insisting. When using the following server ...

Outgoing SMTP Server: smtp.att.yahoo.com

Server port 465
Use secure Sockets Layer (SSL)
Authentication: Password

I am prompted repeatedly to logon.

User Name: Memb...@pacbell.net
Password: xxxxxxxx

The following works ...

Not everybody in the 'pacbell.net' domain migrated to "SBC Yahoo! DSL
Service" (as it was called in 2002, when migration was urged). Those who did
not migrate can't use the Yahoo! servers; they just plain won't work.

More recently, AT&T changed the MX record for 'mail.pacbell.net'; it is now
an alia to the legacy SMTP AUTH servers, and *requires* using
authentication, with the full email address (%User_ID%@pacbell.net) and
password, for email submission to work. As other have already noted, either
port 25, or port 587 is acceptable. SSL is not an option.
