Today I got an email that had been sent to me on JULY 22!

I get daily authentication errors, and yeah, my settings are just fine
- the server is broken, as usual.

Some of my mail from weeks ago nevr bounced, and I never got it.

I cannot authenticate on ANY SBC news servers.

Can these people do ANYTHING right ???

that's very annoying. can you post the received headers, so we can see
where it was delayed?

I would, but I deleted the thing in disgust - I had already talked to
the person by phone, who was pissed off that I had not responded to
her mail.

Next time I will keep it and post it with headers.

The s__t will never stop. I recently cancelled my SBC (Pacific Bell) DSL
account in June. I was experiencing frequent e-mail delays (I am trying to
run a business), low DSL speed (400 kilobits/sec on a good day),
eliminating ("censoring") many types of newsgroups, price increases for
worsening service, poor customer service, etc. etc. etc. I could write a
book of horror stories. Here's the final insult: I was informed by PacBell
that it will take at least 3 billing cycles before the DSL charges are
removed from my phone bill. By the time they get their billing straight
(sometime in October), I will have paid over $200 for DSL service that I
canceled two months ago. PacBell told me that if I don't pay my phone bills
on time, I will get overdue notices, late payment charges, and possible
disconnection of my phone service. I filed a complaint with the CA Public
Utilities Commission, but that may take months to process.

Fortunately, Astound Broadband cable modem service (based on fiber optic
technology which is far superior to conventional CATV cable) is now
available in my city (Walnut Creek, CA). I immediately signed up and
discovered that almost everyone else in my neighborhood did the same
(Astound also offers cable TV service and phone service). The difference in
service is incredible. Believe it or not, here's my experience with
Astound's cable modem service:

1. Consistent speeds between 1.5 and 2 Megabits/sec (4-5 times faster than
my PacBell DSL connection). Because of the high capacity of fiber optic
cable, service doesn't slow down when more users connect during the busy
evening hours.
2. No incidents of downtime or delays for e-mail service.
3. An extensive list of uncensored newsgroups.
4. Cost of $35 per month. Free installation, free modem, first month's
service is free.
5. Quick service. After I ordered the installation, it was done the
following week. And it was installed correctly the first time. With
PacBell, my DSL wasn't operating correctly for the first 9 months.
6. Prompt and courteous customer service. I was never on hold for more
than 30 seconds and there is no voicemail jail.
7. Knowledgeable techs on the phone who give the correct advice the first
time.

I understand that the Astound company has plans to expand to many more
cities in the San Francisco Bay Area, mostly in the communities in the East
Bay Area. To date, they are operating only in Concord and Walnut Creek.
The only problem is that there is an extensive amount of work to lay the
underground cable system and it takes one or two years to complete the work
for each city.

but doesn't help with e-mail problems at all -- the op already gave up on
the lousy netnews service, posting the article via uncensored-news.
perhaps <http://fastmail.fm> or <http://freeshell.org> would provide useful
e-mail service (for the op, if not for others).
