I just used Earthlink chat to confirm that my account has been
cancelled by my phone call. Chat was *very* quick to respond,
asked my account secret word, and confirmed cancellation June 16.

I compliment Earthlink for the good Chat service.

I wonder if my web site will be unblocked for excess traffic before
then, having been blocked "for the remainder of the calendar month"
on April 12.

Did you ever use chat to try and figure out why you site has not been
unblocked?

Yes, and I reported here June 1 :

" I chatted with Earthlink chat a week ago and chat offered no
solution, only condolences. Chat said it was unfortunate that such
a good, long-time customer received such treatment."

Interesting comment from an Earthlink employee.

( the site is still blocked -- I just checked )

The replacement is not: frontal-lobe.info

his site was closed because he put up a 15 megabyte file in his folder the
terms of service for you're free EarthLink or mind spring site for the last
10 years is 10 megs per email address.
and back in the days when you only had one and had to pay for more it was a
tiny 5 megs of space per account I know this because my own site has been up
since EarthLink opened for business in 1994.

Earthlink blocks any attempt to exceed the allotted space.

I have 21 MB on netcom.com (and 10 MB on other e-mail addresses).
Netcom was in business well before 1994 and Mindspring/Earthlink
acquired their contracts.

When I ftp to it the opening message says, "You disk quota is 21.00
megabytes" It has said that as long as I remember -- maybe 1992.

The blocking message says (copy/paste right now) :

quote

The Web page or file that you requested is temporarily unavailable. It
has been so popular this month that it exceeded its free monthly
traffic allotment. Access to this Web site will be restored on the
first of next month. Please come back then.

* traffic * allotment

*traffic* not *space* allotment, which it is not possible to exceed.

see the message for yourself: http://home.netcom.com/~masonc

That message has been there since about April 12.

This is Earthlink's e-mail response to an e-mail complaint to
EarthLink Electronic Customer Support:

quote:
If the website was down during this month then it will be restored on
1st of next month. If the website was down last month and not yet been
restored on the 1st of this month then we need to escalate the issue
to approprite[sic] department, so that our engineers can check the
issue at the server end and take necessary action to restore your
website. To escalate the issue, we need to verify the account
ownership, which is not possible through Email department. So, to
escalate the issue to appropriate department, we request you contact
us via Live Chat at:

http://support.earthlink.net/chat

We assure you, once you contact us via Live Chat, our friendly
representative will escalate the issue on high priority and will make
sure that the issue gets fixed as soon as possible.

The site, blocked April 12, is still blocked. I had *already*
reported this via Live Chat. Should I try Chat again? I do have
a limit: I block ISP's who have bad business manners, who
violate their contract, and who make correction a chore.

My website was blocked from April 12 until June 17.

It is no longer blocked but there's a new message you can see:

http://home.netcom.com/~masonc

I think I was there 21 years, certainly 14 according to Earthlink.

Economists call it constructive destruction" as companies fall
into mismanagement or obsolesence.

Have fun,

Mason C now http://frontal-lobe.info and rebuilding
