Has anyone else had their older DSL modem just stop working and
Earthlink won't replace it free of charge. I have had 3 modems (at
different locations) all go bad within the last month. Is Earthlink
purging their olders systems forcing everyone to pay $80 for a new
modem or re-contract up for a year?
I think there is some class-action possibilities here.

Not sure what you mean by "old". I have had the same ADSL modem for the
last two years and no problems.

Do you know why the modems stop working? Electrical surges? Lighting
strikes that may cause surges on the phone line?

the fact you have lost 3 modems in the last month tells you something on
YOU'RE end is not right ie surges line shorts ect.
i would start with the phone company and have then check the lines in to
youre house condo or apt .
that inculdes the inside wireing up to the DSL modem once thats ruled out
then you start looking at the modems them selves.
what make and model are thay?

Original Speadstream that I paid EL $200 for in 2001 (wanted to be able to
cancel that "new Fangeled" service if I was not pleased). regularly get 2.4
Down.
MY network is on a UPS,(EL's (Covads) part is NOT as evidenced during an wide
spread power outage. EL blamed MY equipment. I pulled the UPS PLUG out of the
wall while doing an on-line support chat and typed" BULL Sh*t. This whole room
is now running on the UPS, the problem is at your end".

Something is really wrong with you power or phone line if you lost 3 modems.
