Earthlink's usenet service has unannouncedly changed, it is unexplained
how much service we are supposed to get in the fail mail, which also
includes some advertisment for Giganews without an explanation of how
you implement it.

This Support Center article may be accurate, even tho it claims to have
been last updated in 2007, as it mentions Gigaews, who was not
Earthlink's provider at the time (the articles apparent date precedes
Giganews buying Supernews's corporate customers, who Earthlink was). If
accurate, there is now no way to check the newly implemented quote, you
just get a fail mail.

http://kb.earthlink.net/case.asp?article=resid8532
"
Is there a download quota limit?
Yes. In order to make our News service fair to all users, EarthLink does
enforce download limits on its Usenet service. The limit is 5GB during
the last 30 days. Please note that "Headers" and articles count towards
the limit.

Unlike other services, we do not set limits based on calendar months. If
you were to download 5GB on January 29th, you would be considered over
quota until 30 days from then, or February 28th. Users that have not
downloaded 5GB are able to interact with the server without any limits,
while users that exceed the 5GB quota in their last 30 days of usage are
rate-limited, or throttled, to 64 kilobits per second.

How do I check my quota history?
You will receive an email from GigaNews to the address you used to
authenticate into EarthLink Newsgroups when you have used 90% of your
bandwith. You will receive another email when you have maxed out and
used 100% of your bandwith."

Here's the fail mail that's been showing up:

Considering there's only evidence of it occuring in the last month or
so, I continue to discount your incessant ranting.

Someone is kidding you with that notice (or inserted by the network
provisioned).

Lots of downloads and NO notice or stoppage. like I used to get on the EL run
server farms.

EL has changed providers from Covad to SBCglobal in my area.
No notice given (I only noticed because I checked my IP from IPchicken and it
shows the full info).
EL FAQ is lame and out of date.

This is a newly out of date FAQ, tho, newer than it claims based on the
mention of Giganews. It's also a change since the last time I saw the
quota info, which mentioned the tool on the Earthlink site for checking
it,long after that stopped working after the Supernews switchover.

The DSLReports thread shows it was hitting people at different times
over the last month, as if they're slowly implementing the system, with
other people saying they're notgetting hit by it and downloading many
times the supposed cap). People are also saying they're getting cut off
in the last month, so it's not just spam or phishing (unless the people
on DSLReports are the spammers/phishers, and they seem a bit unhappy
about it for that).

I subscribed to EarthLink Experience (10 hours of dial-up per month,
e-mails, have newsgroup/usenet access to Giganews, etc.) last summer
(2008). Customer support said it has usenet/newsgroup access with no
limits when I signed up. Maybe this was recently changed.

As for me getting those emails and errors, I haven't gotten any yet. I
know I had downloaded about 10 GB on a weekend a couple weeks ago and in
the past.
