Most of the time when I'm near a Comcast hotspot, my Kindle Fire sees
two networks that it can join: XfinityWifi and CableWifi. They both
accept my Comcast credentials, but I get different speeds. They can
range anywhere from 5 Mbps to over 100 Mbps, and it doesn't seem
predictable which one will be faster. I always try both, and select the
faster one if I plan on doing anything involving video.

Yesterday's announcement makes me think that CableWifi are the
residential modems that offer public Wifi, while XfinityWifi are the
dedicated hotspots. Does that sound right? But I didn't think they'd
rolled the residential service out yet in my area, a Boston suburb.

Barry, do you have any concerns about the potential for people to set
up rogue hot spots using these SSIDs, in order to harvest Comcast
customer usernames and passwords?

CableWifi is the SSID used for hot spots that allow access to customers
of five cable companies. All XfinityWifi hotspots are CableWifi
hotspots, but not all CableWifi hotspots are XfinityWiFi hotspots.
