I am currently a Frontier Communications customer for local phone
service. If I switch to Comcast for bundled service of phone +
internet
+ cable, will I still have to pay Frontier a surcharge or fee every
month for Comcast phone service?

Dear Ron,

Thank you for contacting us regarding your Comcast High Speed Internet
service.

Ron if you elect to have Comcast Digital Voice replace your current
home
phone service, Comcast will do all the work to ensure that your
service
is seamlessly transitioned from your current service provider. Your
current service provider will be notified of your decision to switch
to
Comcast when we contact them to switch over your phone number. Your
current local phone service will be cancelled when your Comcast
Digital
Voice service is installed. Please do not contact your current local
phone service provider to cancel your service, as this may result in
an
interruption of your service. We do, however, recommend you follow up
with your current provider once your service has been installed.

When ordering Comcast Digital Voice, if you decide that you want a new
phone number, then you will need to contact your current phone service
provider to cancel your service. To avoid any service interruptions,
please wait until after your Comcast service is installed to cancel
your
existing local phone service.

Please note: If you choose not to switch over all of your numbers to
Comcast from your current service provider, you will be responsible
for
canceling the numbers you don't switch over. Once again, to avoid any
possible interruption in service, do not cancel any numbers until
after
your Comcast service is installed.

Thank you for choosing Comcast.

Sincerely,

Michael
Comcast Customer Care Specialist

Frontier charges a monthly fee of $95.50 plus local tax to all of
their customers that cancel their service and get phone service with
any other phone service provider. Should you use your new Comcast
Digital Voice servive to place any long distance calls they charge and
additional $5.95 per long distance minute of use of your Comcast
digitasl Voice service. All Frontier fees are payable 3 month prior to
usage and failure to pay all charges in advance will rersult in them
sending Bubba out to kick the shit out of your dogs and kids.

Not if Comcast does the "port" correctly.

Do you have a single phone number?

Once you leave your current phone company that account is cancelled. There
would be no future fees apart from a final bill.

Before selecting Comcast as your VOIP provider, review the prices and
features of the many other VOIP providers out there. My provider charges
$12.95 per month with a one year pre-paid commitment. Comcast is probably
about $33 per month until the promotional rate ends.

One may also consider having cellphone service only these days.

Yes.

My friend tells me this surcharge exists b/c I live in an area served
only by Frontier's phone lines and that Comcast would have to pay
Frontier to 'lease' their lines.

Comcast Digital Voice service is via the Cable so they won't be using
the phone lines except within your home.

How is that any different from VOIP?

As I understand it, Comcast Digital Voice would still come w/ lots of
associated fees and charges, unlike VOIP.

I'm sorry. I didn't realize you were severely retarded or I wouldn't
have responded.

Comcast Digital Voice is a regular telephone service that uses VOIP
technology.

The difference from third-party VOIP services like Vonage and Skype is
that they use a separate channel on the cable, and a dedicated backbone
network, so the VOIP traffic doesn't share the same infrastructure as
regular Internet use. So your downloads and your phone calls won't
interfere with each other. And they can optimize QOS on the VOIP
backbone.

Yes, they have to pay all the same fees that telcos like Verizon do, so
they'll pass charges like the Universal Service Fee on to customers.

Isn't it Comcast that has control of the separate 'channel' on the
cable, whereas VoIP services (non-Comcast) must ride the internet access
piece?

Yes. I think that second use of VOIP was meant in a generic sense.

It looks like a badly placed pronoun. I read it to mean this:

"Comcast Digital Voice [CDV] is a regular telephone service that uses VOIP
technology. The difference [that CDV has] from VOIP services like Vonage
and Skype, is that they [CDV] use a separate channel on the cable" etc etc.
