I'm a Comcast customer, but because I can't find any ATT newsgroups, I'm
posting here for a friend.

A friend is considering purchasing a home in Camino, California.  That's
about 10 miles from Placerville.  Because this will be an AirBnB home,
internet and TV are very important.
The current resident (seller) has ATT internet (copper cable) and DirecTV
(satellite).  I called ATT to see what internet speeds are available at
this home, and I was told there's only one plan, which provides 'up to 18
Mbps' and that's when connected to the gateway.  He worries that speeds may
be extremely slow, and especially slow when connected via WiFi.  Also,
streaming may be near impossible.  Comments?

Hey! AT&T Broadband (former TCI) merged into Comcast two decades ago!
AT&T owned a cable subsidiary for just a few years.

I'd say it's on topic.

Yep. I've been with Comcast through all it's incantations, since 1999,
when it was @Home. I remember ATTBI. My email addresses changed from
@home.net, to @attbi.net, to comcast.net.

A lot of people were fond of @Home, then Excite went bankrupt
mysteriously and vanished over night. It didn't seem like the customer
base got sold. Everybody lost service. Or was that @Work?

At least 300 Mbps is what I think is good for several guests doing
things at the same time.

There is a newsgroup rec.video.cable-tv and alt.cable-tv but hey,
usenet is starved for activity, be welcome,

I do also remember @Excite, and had a throw-away email address there.
Their headquarters were a few miles from me way back then.

This line intentionally left blank
Maybe check for a regional fiber ISP here:

At this location, all that is offered is ATT internet over POTS at
18Mbps, or Viasat over satellite at either 25Mbps or 50Mbps.

No fiber, let alone underground cable out there.

Locally, ATT slow-verse Internet crawls along at 5Mbps down and 1/2 Mbps up.
At $55/mo, who the fusk would take that deal?
