Modem has been connected for 40 days w/o a problem.

This AM - no connection. A poke in the eye with
a sharp stick (a.k.a. reset) fixes it, the log says DHCP
failed:
date time explanation
10/02/2009 01.17 TFTP failed - request sent - No Response
10/02/2009 01.17 DHCP WARNING - Non-critical field invalid in response.
10/02/2009 01.17 DHCP FAILED - Discover sent, no offer received
10/02/2009 01.15 No Ranging Response received - T3 time-out
10/02/2009 01.15 SYNC Timing Synchronization failure - Failed to
acquire QAM/QPSK symbol timing
10/02/2009 01.15 SYNC Timing Synchronization failure - Failed to
acquire FEC framing
10/02/2009 01.10 Received Response to Broadcast Maintenance Request,
But no Unicast Maintenance opportunities received - T4 timeout
10/02/2009 01.10 SYNC Timing Synchronization failure - Failed to
receive MAC SYNC frame within time-out period

Are leases from comcast set to timeout at 1:00 AM?
Is network maintenance being done at the same time?

Often my connection goes stupid and the error message is "can't find DHCP daemon" and comcast says
it's my sytemt(including their modem), IOW, NEVER their problem, always yours.

Quick answer:
I power off/on my modem every few weeks during off-peak times so if any
network 'enhancements' the network can re-establish clean connection. I
still occasionally get no response though no fault of mine. DHCP shows a
169. address

If you want to troubleshoot :
Rebooted modem? and/or Pc and OK now ?
Do you normally leave pc ON, or reboot/standby ?
Maybe just now got to you so dropped DHCP while offline ?
Are they maybe working on servers/network so ran out of IP addresses ?
How long is your lease good for ?
I've had from 1 hr to 2 days.

If you DO drop the connection and let PC sit, eventually the time period for
the network check/ handshake grows. At first it be might be seconds, grows
then .. a few minutes ... so when you try to get back online it's in 'quiet
mode'. What I do it break network connection at PC, then power cycle the
cable modem/router, enable network again.

If the lease expires and no server has been contacted, the client must
immediately discontinue using its leased IP address. The client then
proceeds to follow the same process used during its initial startup to
obtain a new IP address lease.

pc TO Sleep; modem and router on always (UPS)

I'm not sure what that means.

Unlikely in rural area like ours.

That sounds about right. So in 40 days it must have renewed ok.

I will give that a try next time.

Hmmm, since it is my router that must follow this perhaps it needs an
update!

Thanks!
