Just another fee they charge because they can.

Did you pay online or better yet, over the phone?

Religion is a crutch, but that's okay... humanity is a cripple.

I suggest that you call Comcast and tell them flatly that you do not pay
convenience fees. The convenience is on the part of Comcast since they
can be assured to get their loot within seconds of generating your bill.
Arguing with Customer Service (nicely) can be quite productive.

Who knows?
I had a fee similar to this on my MCI bill and even though I pay by
automatic checking count deduction, it turns out they were billing to
just send out a paper copy of my calls.

$4 !? That's what I feared!

Think the MCI was $1.50 but I had it removed by just getting electronic
copy.

My wife takes care of all our bills and is often on the phone with
Comcast getting things reduced and adjusted.

Past week, it was home insurance company, that had tacked on a $40
identity theft clause to our insurance bill. She had it removed.

PITA, but you just have to keep an eye on all bills details.
