Dear friends,
On Friday morning, December 9, my husband Bob died peacefully at home, surrounded by his loved ones. On the last night of my recent UK tour, we got the news that Bob’s leukemia had returned and become very aggressive. I flew home for what would be only a matter of weeks that he had left, during which he was so grateful to be able to have closure with his clients, family, and friends thanks to Alive Hospice, helping him keep his pain managed and his head clear.
For those of you who didn’t know him, Bob was a brilliant psychologist, celebrated photographer, writer, and mystic traveler who spent years of his life teaching English in Iran, living in an ashram in India, and who made it a point to dance with the locals wherever he went. He was funny, smart, and kind, and brought so much light and love into my life.
My heart breaks when I think of having to let him go. I am incredibly grateful to have so much love surrounding me through these strange days. Music has always been the best way I have to move through life’s twists and turns and songs have pulled me toward finding a way to make sense of things and heal through grief.
Bob and I talked about my upcoming concerts during his final days, and he felt—in no uncertain terms—that I should get up on stage and "do what I do" if I felt that it was possible emotionally. To me the best thing I can do is sing my songs and keep moving forward, hopefully providing something I’m not even aware of to someone in the audience who needs to hear it. Whether they’re joyful or melancholy, songs always carry the truth.
So, I wanted you to know a that in spite of my grief I am going to keep deep diving into music and let the songs take us both where they will. Being on stage and singing is where I belong and what feels right at this very moment in time. And I consider it a deep privilege to be able to do that.
I will be performing on Thursday night with a full band at the Franklin Theater. The moment I decided to make it a benefit concert for Alive Hospice I felt certain that this would be a great way to celebrate and honor my husband’s memory and say thank you for the amazing care we received, the kind of care hospice provides free of charge to anyone who cannot pay for it.
Thank you all so much for being there, and for being part of my life. I have been so moved by all of the emails, letters, and comments over the years from those who have shared stories with me about how some of my songs have brought them joy or healing. It is a source of boundless hope and gratitude for me.
Love,
Beth
