Robert B. Schwartz Physicist

Robert B. Schwartz, 80, who was a research physicist at the National
Institute of Standards and Technology, died Nov. 6 [2009] of myeloid
leukemia at Georgetown University Hospital. He lived in Chevy Chase.

Dr. Schwartz came to Washington in 1960 to work at the U.S. Naval Research
Laboratory. In 1963, he joined the National Bureau of Standards, later
called the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

He conducted research in dosimetry, the measurement of detectable radiation.
He retired in 1996 but continued to work as a consultant and guest
researcher at the institute until his death. He received the Commerce
Department's silver medal award in1982.

Robert Bernard Schwartz was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. He graduated from Union
College in Schenectady, N.Y., in 1951 and received a doctorate in physics
from Yale University in 1955. He worked at Brookhaven National Laboratory in
Upton, N.Y., before coming to Washington.

In 1978, he was a founder of Kehila Chadasha, a Jewish congregation based in
Montgomery County. He was its president from 1992 to 1994.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Rita Bagley Schwartz of Chevy Chase;
and two sons, David H. Schwartz of Silver Spring and William S. Schwartz of
Pleasant Ridge, Mich.
