I think he died about 5 or 6 years ago. After "Rifleman", he starred in
"Branded", a mid-60s TV western in which he plays a cavalry officer unjustly
drummed out of the service as a coward, who goes around trying to clear his
name. A few of us are even old enough to remember him as a major-league
ballplayer with the Dodgers in the 50s...

Excuse the spelling flame, but it's

Chuck Connors (actor) -- Dead. Lung cancer. Nov 10, 1992. Born 1921

He was an interesting character who played pro baseball before
turning into an actor. One of my favorite bits was when he
played a hillbilly who led a mule through an episode of
Superman in the late '50s.

Don't forget John McIntire (1907-1991), who took Bond's place as
wagonmaster, when Bond died in 1960.

Can't remember who was on "Tombstone Territory", but the stars of "Yancy
Derringer" were Jock Mahoney (1919-1989) as Yancy, and X Brands as
Pahoo-katawa, his Native-American sidekick.

On the subject of long ago stars, can you shed any light on Gloria
Stuart, the 1930's actress? I looked on your server, but the info was
pretty sparse.

Thanks

This is correct. Audie Murphy was Whispering Smith.

Pat Conway starred in "Tombstone Territory," a fitting question
for alt.obituaries, regardless of his dead or alive status.

The IMDb doesn't list birth or death dates for Gloria, but does say that
she'd been married to her second husband (screenwriter Arthur Sheekman) for
44 years when he died in 1978, and that she had a daughter, Sylvia, with
him. Gloria may be best known as the girlfriend, Flora Cranley, in THE
INVISIBLE MAN. Her last film was released in 1946.

There is another, much younger, Gloria Stuart who's been in films only
since 1975.

You are wrong, Boat Breath. McGavin was in a western series set on a river
boat by the title of "Riverboat," If I remember correctly, Burt Renyolds
was also in it.

Not only is he still kickin', but I believe that he was in a recent
episode of General Hospital with a young lady named Amber Tamblyn, who
plays Emily Quartermaine. Just in case anyone cares!

The Broken Arrow TV series aired for two years from 1956-1958 with
reruns shown in 1960. John Lupton starred as Tom Jeffords and Michael
Ansara as Cochise.

Yancy Derringer - Jock Mahoney (Sally Field's step-dad).
Tombstone Territory - Pat Conway and Richard Eastham.

Chuck's first career was in Major League Baseball. He was second base
for the Brooklyn Dodgers, if I'm not mistaken.

Besides the shows you mention, he starred in: "Arrest & Trial", "Cowboy
in Africa" and The Yellow Rose" on TV. He played the Dad in the movie
version of "Flipper".

How about Michael Ansara in "Law of the Plainsman" and the Larry Ward
and Jack Elam in "The Dakotas"! Now THAT was Television!

And what about Jack Lord, Bruce Dern and Warren Oates in "Stoney Burke"
the rodeo show?
