Harlem’s Lewis Lymon Passes (video)
Posted on July 10, 2013 by Harlem World Magazine

Before there was Harlemites like Diddy or Jim Jones there was Harlemite Lewis Lymon. In spite of being in his brother’s shadow (Frankie Lymon), Louie Lymon and his group the Teenchords toured with such acts as Jerry Butler and The Impressions, Jessie Belvin and Mickey and Sylvia.

Lewis Lymon was born in Harlem to a truck driver father and a mother who worked as a maid. Lymon’s mother and father, Howard and Jeanette Lymon, also sang in a gospel group known as the Harlemaires; Frankie Lymon and his brothers Lewis and Howie sang with the Harlemaire Juniors (a fourth Lymon brother, Timmy, was a singer, though not with the Harlemaire Juniors). The Lymon family struggled to make ends meet, and Lymon began working as a grocery boy at age ten. While going to school at Edward Stitt Junior School in Washington Heights. By 1960 they had disbanded.

Lewis performed a few times with Frankie before his death. Lewis Lymon has created several different versions of the Teenchords over the years. Here is the original with Honey Honey.

Jimmy Merchant longtime friend and who sand as with the Teenscords 1957 said Lewis Lyman was, “outstanding versatility, showmanship, and singing skills, (and) he also graced tribute groups such as the Drifters and the Coasters.”

He passed on Monday, July 9th, 2013 of prostate cancer.

The only thing I could find was a reference to Lewis having been born
in 1943 or 1944, which would make him a year or two younger than
Frankie.

"Lydia" by Lewis Lymon and the Teen Chords is a great song; there were others.

I was watching some of the mystery and scandles shows online a couple weeks ago but could not get a link for the one about Frankie.

Being an oldies fan, I knew about Frankie but not Lewis. I recently
discovered his music on youtube. "I'm So Happy" is a great song.
