Karren Weisman, a former graphic artist at USA Today, died October 27,
2006, of brain cancer at Capital Hospice in Arlington, Virginia, having
been a Fairfax County [Virginia] resident, at the age of 52.
Mrs. Weisman was born in Panama City, Florida, and grew up in several
places, including Silver Spring, Maryland, as part of a military
family. She graduated from Springbrook High School in 1972 and received
a bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland in 1976.
She worked as a graphic artist for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory
Commission and Legal Times of Washington before joining the original
staff of USA Today in 1982. She was with the newspaper until 1987, when
she joined Newhouse Newspapers to help start the company's graphics
operation. Known professionally as Karren Loeb, she also had a graphics
and design business with clients that included The Washington Post.
She volunteered with the Country Club View Civic Association and with
the PTAs of Oak View and Laurel Ridge elementary schools in Fairfax,
editing newsletters. She was a supporter of Fairfax Little League and
Braddock Road Youth Club basketball.
Survivors include her husband of 19 years, Larry Weisman of Fairfax
County; two children, Leah Weisman and Daniel Weisman, both of Fairfax
County [Virginia]; three sisters, Susan Long of Sarasota, Florida,
Linda Bobst of Harleysville, Pennsylvania. and Athlea Oakes of Indian
Head, Maryland; and two brothers, Robert Loeb of Olney and Jon Loeb of
Beltsville, Maryland.
