"Fearless" Fred Feldman, the pilot and broadcaster who invented helicopter
traffic reports while working for WOR Radio in New York in the 1950s and
1960s, died over the weekend of a heart attack at the age of 63.
Helicopter traffic reports proved an instant success, and Feldman's idea
was soon picked up by radio stations all across the country. Feldman
himself became a sort of folk hero in New York.

Feldman retired from flying duty about 25 years ago after the station's
helicopter crashed, killing Feldman's relief pilot. Feldman went on to
found and direct Shadow Traffic, a very successful operation which drew
together reports on commuter traffic flow from police and civilian
sources, and synthesized them into brief broadcast reports.

I did some work for shadow in the early days. Fred was truly an
inspiration. I remember one day when, after his first heart attack, he
called in sick one day. Susan Murphy, the program director of Shadow
at the time, snidely said, "One day, he'll cry wolf once too often."

Hey Susan...wherever you are...I GUESS HE WASN'T FAKING, HUH!!
