We Yankee fans were curious as to why we weren't hearing
Michael Kay. (Not that it was a problem listening to the
great team of Jim Kaat and Ken Singleton) Here's why. From
the NY Times:

Rose Kay, 81, the mother of the YES announcer Michael Kay,
died Monday of complications from Alzheimer's disease.
Michael Kay did not travel with the Yankees the last three
weeks to spend more time with her.

So...., what was the family
name before they shortened it?

He's Danny Aiello's nephew, so it's anyone guess.
