Remember Me
Remember me with smiles and laughter,
Because that is the way I will remember you all.
If you can only remember me with tears,
Then don't remember me at all.
An Irish Poem of Remembrance
Divorce Wars, The American Nightmare
Oprah, and an intelligent discussion on divorce and its devastating
affect on children.
While watching your recent show on Divorce and its effect on children,
I called the mother of Anissa Jones,
who portrayed "Buffy" on the show Family Affair. How I came to know
Mrs. Jones and its relavence to this
board I will explain below. On April 18,1999 I watched an installment
of E! True Hollywood Stories on the life
and death of Anissa Jones. As I watched it, I started to have shivers
run up and down my spine. The story of
Anissa as told on the show was a "Mommie Dearest Story". My reaction
came from the fact that the story of
her life sounded so much like my parents talking about their divorced
spouse: all invective and mean, with no
regard for my feelings or the truth. My siblings developed a defense to
this, they went with the wind. I became
withdrawn and retreated from all the hate.I had Anissa's address from
when I was a kid. I had had a very
serious crush on her. I was deeply troubled by the show, the facts as
they were stated on the show and as I
believed them to be when I was a kid were in conflict. I wrote Anissa's
Mom a
letter. I never expected her to reply, but she did. If she had engaged
in the same invective that I had
witnessed on the
show, I would have gone no further. But, instead, she answered the
questions I had posed to her, with very
thoughtful, articulate answers which were more in line with the girl
that I had remembered Anissa to be, and
in total contrast with the facts as stated on the show.
The Producer had used Mrs. Jones as a source for photographs; but had
used opinions from her
ex-husband's side of the family for the body of the story. Out of a
list of over 100 names, less than 25%
agreed to have any part with the show. It shows. I know that Anissa's
parents had as rotten a divorce as my
parents did. I know how Anissa felt because that is exactly what I
experienced growing up; we shared many
of the same personality traits also. People should remember that a kid
is a kid, before they ever become a
star. That is the key to understanding Anissa Jones, her life and her
death. Your show explained many of the
things that I tried to explain to Anissa's Mom. I called her from
Atlanta and told her to watch the show. She did,
and called me back crying. She now understood that a horrible divorce
has its first casualties among the
children. I knew that; Anissa and her brother, Paul knew that. Despite
what E! said; Anissa's life was a
divorce story, and everyone is guilty. I don't just believe that, I
know it. Some sites I created to explain what I
have learned are listed below:

My most fervent desire is to have E! redo the story and tell the whole
truth this time. It is a harrowing lesson of
what not to do in a divorce.I intend to be like the character of Ben
Stone of Law and Order; fair, just, and
relentless in my search for the truth. Everyone deserves that. Anissa
Jones does too. I intend to give Anissa's
life back to her, and stop people from using her life for their own
ends.
