Police: Three Dead In Multi-Car Crash
Women Rush To Aid Of Boy
POSTED: 4:04 pm EDT May 3, 2005
UPDATED: 6:24 pm EDT May 3, 2005
Fire crews and police responded to a fatal crash scene in Farmington
Hills at about 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, according to Local 4 reports.
Police said a woman, a teenager and a child that were inside of a
dark-colored Honda died in the crash that occurred on 12 Mile Road
just east of Orchard Lake Road.
The child was ejected from the impact of the crash, the station
reported.
Julie Norman and Wendy Wolski, who were both nearby when the crash
occurred, rushed to the aid of the child, the station reported. Norman
said the child was breathing, but unconscious.
"When I came running out of the building here, I noticed a child in
the driveway here laying on his stomach," Norman said. "And, he seemed
to be still breathing, so I kind of comforted him until 911 got here."
The child either died en route to the hospital or at the hospital,
Local 4 reported. The other two were pronounced dead at the scene of
the crash, according to the station's reports.
Wolski, who witnessed the crash, said, "I've never seen anything so
gruesome."
Police said the woman driving the Honda entered the turn lane while
traveling eastbound on 12 Mile when the driver of an SUV rear-ended
the Honda, then hit a Ford Jaguar -- which was in the lane next to the
Honda. The SUV then rolled over and struck a Ford Escort, Local 4
reported.
A man inside of the SUV suffered serious injuries, but authorities
said they did not appear to be life-threatening. A woman inside of the
Jaguar and a woman in the Escort both escaped injury in the crash.
Authorities shut down 12 Mile at the scene of the crash. It was
expected to be closed for several hours while police continued to
investigate the incident, the station reported.

Man Faces Drunken Driving, Homicide Charges
POSTED: 8:44 am EDT May 4, 2005
UPDATED: 10:43 pm EDT May 4, 2005
FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. -- A man accused of causing a fatal crash in
Farmington Hills on Tuesday is expected to be charged with drunken
driving and three counts of homicide, Local 4 reported.
Police said Thomas Keith Wellinger (pictured, left) may face a judge
on Thursday from his bed at Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital.
Wellinger had a blood-alcohol level of 0.43, according to police.
Under Michigan law, it is illegal to drive with a bodily alcohol
content of 0.08 or more.
Farmington Hills Police Chief William Dwyer said during a Wednesday
morning news conference that Wellinger's BAC level "in many cases
would be lethal." The BAC level was the highest ever recorded by
Farmington Hills police, the station reported.
"Alcohol and speed has again killed and basically wiped out an entire
family," Dwyer said.
Police believe Wellinger, who had allegedly consumed vodka at his
cabin near Traverse City, was driving above the 45 mph speed limit on
12 Mile Road, just east of Orchard Lake Road, when the crash occurred
at about 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Judith Weinstein, 49, and her sons, Alex, 12, and Sam, 9, were headed
to a dentist appointment. Weinstein had just entered a left turn lane,
with Alex in the front seat and Sam in the rear seat of her vehicle,
when Wellinger's red sport utility vehicle hit their Honda from
behind, pushing the vehicle into oncoming traffic, Local 4 reported.
Judith and Alex Weinstein were pronounced dead at the scene of the
crash, according to the station's reports. Sam was ejected from the
vehicle upon the impact of the crash. He was taken to a hospital and
was later pronounced dead.
The SUV had also crashed into a Ford Jaguar -- which was in the lane
next to the Weinsteins' Honda. The SUV then rolled over and struck a
Ford Escort, Local 4 reported.
A woman inside of the Jaguar and a woman in the Escort both escaped
injury in the crash. Wellinger suffered serious injuries, but
authorities said they did not appear to be life-threatening.
Wellinger remains hospitalized but his condition has been upgraded to
fair. Police said his blood-alcohol level 12 hours after the crash
remained above the legal limit.
"His level this morning, several hours after the accident, is still
around .26," said Dwyer.
Gary Weinstein, the victims' husband and father, has turned to the
support of family, friends and the family's rabbi, Tamara Kolton, of
Birmingham Temple, Local 4 reported.
"All we can do is tell him that he is not alone," said Kolton.
Kolton said Gary Weinstein, who owns Weinstein Jewelers in Novi, and
his family were close and spirited.
"This is a tragedy that's outside the proportions that we can even
integrate psychologically," said Kolton.
The funeral for the three victims is scheduled to be held on Friday
morning at the Dorfman Chapel in Farmington Hills.

Most people with levels that high would find it difficult to
even find the car ignition. And many would it it difficult
to find the car...

To a raging alcoholic, of course, 0.43 might be no worse, impairment-
wise, than 0.20 would be to you or me. Thash shill pre'y dam druk.

The highest I've ever heard of is .588, by an LSU frat back in 1997.
Result: Death. But I'm pretty sure that's still an SEC record.
If you Google Benjamin Wynne BAC, you'll see quite a few articles about
that fateful night.
A friend of mine watches a lot of those forensic cop TV shows, and says
he heard of a guy who would get women really drunk before killing 'em.
Some were said to be clocking up around .800, previously thought
impossible, and voluntarily, probably is.

Carol,
Saying "you're welcome" doesn't fit in this circumstance. My sympathy

considered to be life-thretening").

That is truly tragic and my heart goes out to the victim's family and
friends.
When our daughter, son-in-law, son and granddaughter were hit head on
by a boy-racer two years ago last January (two of them still
recovering from brain injuries), the boy was so badly injured that
they had to give him several blood transfusions before the police were
able to test him for alcohol - so the tests were considered
"inconclusive."
It had also been raining that night and he'd only had his new car
since his 18th birthday 12 days earlier, so, because of what the
prosecutors considered to be "mitigating circumstances" the little
shit was only charged and convicted for "reckless" driving instead of
"dangerous" driving which would have probably meant a jail sentence.
The fact that the worthless punk had previously been charged and
convicted of street racing and was on probation for another driving
offence were not admissible because he'd been under 18 at the time and
considered a "minor."
I sincerely hope the authorities throw the book at the drunk who
caused this accident, but I understand that - just like New Zealand -
drunk drivers get away with murder over there and, as far as I'm
concerned, that's a crime in itself. b
