It's been said that Sir Alec detested being know mainly as Obi-Wan
Kenobi to the masses. The late Richard Harris's final role as
"Dumbledore" in two "Harry Potter" movies may have raised similar
concerns to the actor:

The actor said he took the role of Dumbledore at the behest of his
young granddaughter but was wary of appearing in all of the "Harry
Potter" films. Four novels have been published so far, with
Dumbledore an important player in each, and Rowling has said there
will be seven books overall. "It wasn't because I didn't like the
material or the people involved," Harris told The Associated Press in
an interview last year. "I just didn't like the idea that if you said
'yes' and you did it, then you were committed if they did seven, and I
would have to do seven. "I hate that kind of commitment," he added. "I
hate the idea that my life in any way is sort of restricted." Harris
said he once asked his agent if it was possible to do a few "Harry
Potter" movies but not all of them. "He called me back and said,
`You can get out of it,'" Harris recalled with a smile. "I said, 'Tell
me, how!' And he said ... 'Die.'"

Replacements? Ian McKellan has some wizard experience as does
Christopher Lee. Peter OToole? although he would attempt to steal the
show.

Supposedly he'd promised the granddaughter (or is it niece?) not to
do this...but didn't follow through.

The IMDb still lists him as playing Dumbledore in the third film,
but I doubt that miracles of taxidermy and animatronics will have
him ready when shooting starts in February.

With all due respect to the late Richard Harris, I thought he was awful as
Dumbledore, a wizard whose age is belied by all sorts of mysteries and powers
that we have to believe he keeps in reserve. To me, Harris was just a weak,
funny old coot in a beard. I thought it was how he was directed (Chris
Columbus's misdirection of actors is not unfamiliar to me), but now I guess it
was the infirmities of his illness.

Anyway, O'Toole looks even more infirm than Harris did; he'd be bad. To me
there's only one man who embodies everything that Dumbledore has to be
(especially as Books 3 and 4 get filmed), and I hope that Sean Connery is
approached and says yes.

No, that's a different line of succession, but Connery was the only true
Bond, even though he did succeed David Niven.

Connery gets my vote, but I wouldn't balk a paying $8 for a ticket to
see Paul Scofield in the role. Or Christopher Lee.

At least he can steal anyone's ham.

I stand corrected. You are correct JD that Niven did portray 007 *after*
Connery. The real truth however makes us both wrong. Barry Nelson played 007
in the 1954 TV movie Casino Royale, and David Niven played 007 in the 1967
remake of Casino Royale. Both these men are not included in the "official
list of the men who have portrayed James Bond" on the various websites I
scoured across. There are only 19 "official" Bond films and the "official"
men who portrayed Bond are; Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore,
Timothy Dalton, and Pierce Brosnan. (courtesy of www.007.com)

???

OK, I screwed up that age-requirement-for-senators thing, but I remain
confident that Niven played Bond only once, and it came several years
after Connery established the role.
