There is a British mathematician named C.A.R. Hoare who designed
the fabulously influential algorithm called QuickSort in 1962. Any
relation to the rest of these layabouts?

No, his first name is not Crack,

Yes, if he's Charles Antony Richard Hoare.

OT comment: Last night CNN did an hour on the Royal Family. Just as they got
to the part on Prince William, they cut away to a bulletin on the attack on
Ramallah. Neat way to piss off younger viewers who tuned in to catch a glimpse
of the "royal teen heartthrob." Who's doing the thinking at CNN, or is there
nobody at the throttle after all?

The late Joseph Hoare (1925-2002) was a fourth cousin of the
mathematician CAR Hoare (Sir Charles Antony Richard Hoare, known as
Tony b. 1934, knighted in 2000). Both gents are descended from Henry
Hoare, (1750-1828), of Mitcham Grove, Surrey, Parner in Hoare's Bank
from 1778.

CAR Hoare's mother was a Villiers, descended from the Earls of
Clarendon.

Nice to see it's not just pop stars, film actors and political
hacks getting knighted these days. QuickSort was a giant step forward
for computer science and he deserves recognition outside the field.

Yes, that's true, but many of their viewers prefer puff pieces to actual news.
