MISSOURI CITY, Texas — Robert E. "Bob" Brown of Missouri City, Texas, passed away Thursday, July 28, 2016, at Oyster Creek Manor in Missouri City. He was born Nov. 22, 1923, in Versailles, Ohio, eldest child of Orville and Mabel (Peters) Brown.
In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his second wife, Madeline Hershey Brown, sister Carolyn Ann Brown Hakes and sister Marjorie Joan Brown Jungbluth. Bob graduated from Greenville, Ohio, High School in 1942 where he excelled in basketball, was All-American and the first member of the GHS Sports Hall of Fame. Bob received a full basketball scholarship to Miami University, Oxford, Ohio,and graduated in 1949 and is a member of Miami University Sports Hall of Frame.
Bob interrupted his college education for two years to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps 1943-45 at Camp Miramar, San Diego, California, where he played service basketball. He was signed to play professional basketball with Providence (Rhode Island) Steamrollers in the BAA, and followed with playing for Denver Nuggets, Denver Colorado. He was offered a contract with Boston Celtics but declined to leave basketball for a business career and the game of golf.
He was sales representative for Kaiser Steel Corporation, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Oregon Steel Corporation, Houston, Texas , for his entire career and ended as sales ambassador for LaBarge Pipe and Steel Co. in Houston. At retirement, he continued to play golf till shortly before his death having started as a caddie at Greenville Country Club and playing golf 78 years earlier. Earlier in his business career, at the age of 61, he won the Kaiser Steel Open ProAm Golf tournament at Pebble Beach,California. He served as president of Braeburn Country Club in Houston and was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas.
Bob is survived by daughter Deborah (Rocky) Robinson of Houston, son Robert Brown Jr. of Houston, sister Nancy (Bill) Warner of Greenville, Ohio, and brother Ron (Suzanne) Brown of Midland, Texas; stepdaughter Holly Hershey Bott of Dripping Springs, Texas; three grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and eight nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will follow later in Sugar Land, Texas.
