MOHAWK, Mich. -- A man described by a relative as mentally unbalanced
apparently killed his father with an ax, then hanged himself,
authorities said.
Police found the body of Daniel Kariniemi, 82, of Livonia, sitting
face down at the kitchen table of the family's summer home, The Daily
Mining Gazette of Houghton reported Monday. An ax lay on the floor.
Kariniemi's 44-year-old son, Ronald Kariniemi, also of Livonia, was
found hanging from a rope in the attic stairway.
Keweenaw County Medical Examiner Dr. David Gilbert said the deaths
appear to have been a murder-suicide. Authorities were awaiting
autopsy results.
"Superficially it looks that way, but we can't be certain right now,"
Gilbert said.
Sheriff Ron Lahti said one of the elder Kariniemi's other sons
discovered his father and called police from a neighbor's house. That
son had arrived to visit his father and brother.
Betty Kariniemi of Copper City, Daniel Kariniemi's sister-in-law, said
Ronald Kariniemi was "mentally unstable."
Daniel Kariniemi, a native of Painesdale, was a retired General Motors
engineer. Ronald Kariniemi was a self-employed artist.
"Superficially" ahhhh the numbing and dumbing continues;
unabated.

Maybe it's a bit stereotypical, but, those two things seem somewhat
relative.
