Mary Sohovic AllenMary Stanton Allen, née Sohovic, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2017 in New York City. She was 88 years old.

Mary was born on November 1, 1928 in Bridgeport, CT, attended Warren Harding High School and The New England Conservatory of Music, majoring in Voice.

As Mary Stanton, she enjoyed a decade of performing on Broadway in seven shows, including the original companies of The Pajama Game and Once Upon a Mattress. She also appeared in the 1957 film of The Pajama Game with Doris Day and John Raitt. Her maiden name, Sohovic, is forever engraved in Musical Theatre History as her friend, George Abbott, used it to name a character in his musical, Damn Yankees.

Mrs. Allen also enjoyed a long and dedicated career as an educator. She received her Master's Degree in Education from Fordham University and taught at both Marymount School and The Nightingale-Bamford School, where she retired in 1994 as the head of the Middle School.

Mary dedicated her retirement to her six cherished grandchildren. She is survived by her three children and their spouses, Mana Allen & Ben Model, William Allen & Christina Sessa Allen and Joanna Allen Lodin & Jeffrey Lodin, along with their children: Joseph, Christopher and Penn Lodin, Molly Model and William and James Allen. She was pre-deceased by her parents Mary and Joseph Sohovic, her siblings Paul, Frank, Ilona and Father Joseph Sohovic, and her beloved husband of 43 years, John M. Allen.

She will be laid to rest in a private ceremony in Stratford CT, and a memorial in New York City will be planned for a future date. Donations in her memory may be made to The Actors Fund. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 3rd at 11 a.m. meeting directly at Our Lady of Grace Church 498 Second Hill Lane Stratford.
